If you want to put a Full auto out of a Type 3 into a Beetle then you will have to do a fair bit of modifying

there was a semi auot Beetle that you need to use the gear selector to change gear but it dosent have a clutch 68 to 72

I have seen a few VW trikes with an automatic EA81 or EA82 subaru engine. Modifying the body work isn't a problem. We will be using a completely new fibreglass shell to allow the added height needed for the wheelchair

Thanks everyone.

Could you please tell me if the type 3 is a reasonably simple swap or do the mounts need changing? While we are at it is it worth changing to IRS?

I forgot to ask, how common are the type 3 autos and how much do you think they should cost

A semi auto would bolt straight in but it does require specific engine mods to work and a different shifter as well.Doing a complete auto insert would require removal of the frame horns and fabrication of a mount to support the box and engine but it is doable...just $$$$ and time and fab skills.

Thanks everyone, have been looking everywhere for a type 3 auto gearbox. They are almost impossible to find.

How much more modification is needed to use the Subaru gearbox instead?

South Australia

how reliable are they? Since it sounds like you need to modify the rear end a reasonable amount would it be worth doing a little more and using a Japanese transmission/engine combined
