welding the clutch fork
i think my clutch fork has broken "havent taken engine out yet"
. i took the pedal assembly out and the hook that the clutch cable sits over is fine. so im assuming my clutch fork is broken. i was going to order a
HD one from the states but have been told i can weld my one and shell be sweet.
any pointers would be great, thanks.....

get a S / hand one and it will last another 20 years
dont try and weld as you may get the alignment out of wack

Yes, very easy to weld a stock one.
Early ones wear through the arm where the TO bearings sits, so will need replacement,
and the later ones wear too, but total failure will normally be the spot weld holding it together in most cases.
That being said, after market ones are very cheap and available from most of your local VW stores here in Australia,
but quality is not a good as original German.
Find a good used one and weld it.
If your arm has dropped off,
the chances of welding it back on correctly are reduced.....or buy new.

I have had a similar problems several times
a. pulled out the engine and found the clutch pressure plate had collapsed
b. found the thrust race had fallen off
c. broken clutch fork
You never know what you'll find with and old bug good luck.

have you checked the clutch cable is ok you said the hook end was but you didn't mention the cable

a stick welder will do just fine, as the pic above shows.

i was told i'd done a clutch fork years ago and removed the motor to find that the thrust bearing had popped its clips and managed to slip off the
fork on one side. the clutch felt as though it was only engaging right at the last inch or so of pedal travel.
see.... air and water do mix

I've had this happen a few times over the years. Twice it was the clips had gone missing, twice it was the thrust bearing worn out and fallen to bits
and only once was it the fork broken, but when that happened the fork then went through the pressure plate and destroyed that. When that happened I
knew it wasn't going to be pretty when I pulled the engine so if that is your problem good luck.
