wrx conversion....

this may have been answered before, but can anyone tell me what is involved in doing a wrx engine conversion in a 71 beetle..
how complicated is it, and at roughly what cost??
i can get a engine 4 about $500 and my mate has a loom and comp..
and do i need to make engine mounts??

as BiX said best to try the engine conversion forum

but as someone whos just started a subi conversion ill pass on some info ive learned

u cant mix and match engines with looms and ECUs cos nearly every year is different

u may be getting the engine cheap but ur gonna need a gearbox that can handle the power which is gonna cost way more than u expect
also to fit the quad cam motors involves radically reworking the rear body work as well as moving the gearbox forward which is only possible if ur bug is IRS not swing axle
is it a 71 super or standard?

id be warey of an EJ20T that cheap unless its a mate doing u a favour
ive found one complete with ECU and loom for a similar price but a few mates that know subis have told me to avoid it as the usual going rate is way higher than that and it hasnt been heard running by the current owner who bought it as a project but suddenly changed his mind.....

The Older EJ20T engines are the legacy ones. They have problems with the lifters on them.
It can be addressed, but thats why they are cheap
Ichiban in Sydney ( jap importer/wrecker) regukarkly have ex imported EJ20T for around 700-800 mark,.
When I looked into it a stock ECU was not going to help. There are so many sensors that are not used that by the time you trick the ecu into thiniking its in a wrex you may as well have started from scratch with a programmable job., but I am not an expert in this area- just what I have been told

Boof on this forum has a workshop and will do conversions for people
When I lookedinto I estimated at least 5-6k in part to fabricate/buy + labour and engineering.

well my mate is realy into subies.. he races his 98 wrx wagon in decas.. the loom and ecu is from his engine.
he bought a sti front cut for his car.. he said i can have them, the engine he can get me is a 98 ej20t..
so it will all match up.. he also knows a guy threw wrx club that can strip down a loom so it just runs the basics
eg: no a/c no heater etc... aaaaannnnnnddddd he just happens to have a spare gearbox:yes:..

Joel, my car is a 71 superbug.. i know i have to move the gearbox, but do i need to install engine mounts??
