Datsun L18 76 Kombi
Hi all
We recently purchased a 76 kombi with Datsun L18
We gave it an exterior paintjob with a septone quickdry enamel
last coat : 50% clear coat mixed
anyway enough bragging
Does anyone know if this is a SSS engine?
engine number L18 717******W ends with 'W'
head Nissan V912 cam marked with "C"
also it originally came with a 1600
so gearbox has 3 ribs
with an L18 (105hp or something)
I should probably try to find a new box while it still runs?
this was converted and been thru Regency a few years back got the papers for it. but the engine mount is rather crude
thanks in advance for shedding some light

yup, the L18W was the 180B SSS engine
they were stronger blocks than the L18B for some reason, cant remember whats different, something to do with the bores sounds familar
out of interest what carbs are on it?

um, I'd try a nissan forum re the engine number stuff and whether it is a SSS motor. Does it have twin carbs? From my memory that's what the SSS
coupe came standard with.
re the 3rib 1600 box. It should be ok if you don't do burnouts with it and avoid powershifts. Just watch reverse. It's literally the size of a 50c
piece and not very strong at all. In fact the ratios probably better fit the datto motor for 100km/h than they do a stock VW 1600. How many revs does
it do at 100?

The SSS had extra strengthening casting ribs on the outside of the engine block. Not sure if anything else.

Twin Hitachi SU's!!! ( i wish)
no, the previous guy had one of the 2barrel nikki carb vac secondary. so i stick a 32/36 on since i had a spare.
we haven't take it out to a 100 yet. and haven't fit a tachometer yet lol
and when we just got it and drove it around it was only running on 1st barrel of the carby because the accelerator cable moved out of the lock
just finished the paint and moved the radiator. the precious owner had it on the bull bar so we moved it under the car
if i finish the exhaust. i might take it out friday
don't know about the ribs on the block. there's a few but could be standard ribs. it was near the flywheel area going vertical. i'll have a look
again tomorro
post some pics soon
cheers
