'Golf Loses Title' - today's Telegraph

One of those 'huh?!' moments today when I spotted this news item in the motoring section of today's Telegraph:

"GOLF LOSES TITLE. The Ford Fiesta has just overtaken the Volkswagen Golf as Europe's favourite car. Through the first quarter of 2010, sales of the Fiesta have reached 104,496 - and 68,630 in March alone, up by 25.8 percent on a year earlier - against 135,048 for the Golf."

Huh? Last I knew, 135,048 (VW) is MORE than 104,496 (Ford). So how does the Golf lose the title?

Unless it's a typo and the Ford is 144,496 - who knows.

A sad day if Ford takes such a title. But if they do it could be down to some dodgy figures

perhaps new VWs and new fords all look the same to most buyers in Europe. The VWs we all love were made by very different company from the big corporate steam roller that makes Golfs today.

and they are very different cars with different reputations too.

not really a fair comparison.
falcon is really the only car ford australia can put they're hand up for which is why they suck

Todays usless trivia:

Ford have used rebadged mazdas for pretty much their entire line up for decades including the said Fiesta which is just a rebadged mazda2

confused? look at this way

festiva - 121
Laser - 323
Telstar- 626
Probe - MX5
Courier - B2600
and on it goes but interestingly enough a courier which is a rebadged B2600 both are actually built on triton running gear..... go figure

I thought (or perhaps I read somewhere) that the Ford Courier/Mazda Bravo was neither fully a Ford or Mazda as the Bravo/Courier is a car made from the shared knowledge (upon some agreement both companies signed) of both Ford and Mazda. Am I confusing the B2600 with a Bravo?
Im gonna have to go check out the underside Tritons now!

Other useless knowledge, the Ford Festiva was actually a rebadged Kia, with a Mazda engine and various other parts:crazy: Crikey talk about copy cats!!!

Bravo/B2600 same diff, Bravo was just the new name that replaced B2600.

the sqaure shape 1st gen WA festivas were a carbon copy 121 but your right about the 2nd and 3rd gen like my old one were rebadged Kia Avellas fitted with the B3/B5 mazda 121 running gear

i used to have a thing for good japanese running gear in tinny Korean bodies. my Scoupe was the same, mitsy 4G15 in a crappy hyundai body

whats new? maverick = patrol pintara = corsair astra = pulsar corolla=nova, satria=lancer commodore lexcen, golf=a3 passat=a4 passat=fox, monaro sold under pontiac and vauxhall, gemini was made by isuzu, GM USA have been model sharing since the first dawn. Dont know for sure but how much Volkswagen was in the SEAT models?

People are funny. I have links to a cheese factory that sells the exact same cheese under different brands. If you change the label it changes peoples perceptions considerably. Some people wont shop at aldi because they want the brand name stuff. Half of it is exactly the same stuff but different label. Snobbery.

All SEATs since about 1992 have used VW running gear. SEAT is 100% owned by VW, as is Skoda (same deal). In Europe VW has tried to position Skoda as the 'value' model, while SEAT is the 'sporty' model. They are all VWs, on VW platforms, with differently-styled bodies and trim. Even the Bentleys, Lamborghinis and Bugattis (that VW also own) are just pumped up Audis nowadays.

I saw an old Toyota Lexcen on the road the other day - now there's badge engineering taken to ridiculous extremes. And I remember that the Falcon ute was sold as a Nissan ute too - can't remember what that was called. I guess we can thank John Button for those.

I like No-Frills at Franklins, especially for basics like sugar, flour, salt, tomato sauce, nuts, pasta, orange juice, peanut butter, soft drink, etc etc. Why would you want to buy name brand for those? No Frills cheddar cheese tastes the same as Bega or Coon. I only get fussy about ice-cream - I like my Streets Blue Ribbon - No Frills ice cream ain't the same.

FALCON UTES had 12 months warranty...

NISSAN UTES had 24 months warranty...

and the nissan utes still didn't sell... lol

Nissan Pintara - Ford Corsair were made jointly by Nissan/Ford
in Australia... with different bodies..
