rotational knocking noise after lowering


hi guys,

I have a 66 beetle, that I lowered and now has a rotational knocking noise from l/h/r wheel.
-occurs at all speeds
-dose not change noise eg louder or larger.
-still occurs with brakes applied or handbrake applied
-can replicate by hand whn jacked up and at all angle's
-does not change when steering left to right
-does not sound like a typical wheel bearing eg.whirring noise.
-did not occur previous to lowering.
-noise became apparant straight after, heard while driving around block.

lowered 2 outer clicks in rear.

Just wondering if it is something that usually occurs when you lower a beetle.

any thoughts on what it maybe???? would be a help?

Was already lowered with beam adjusters, originally the rear was a click down, and sat bum high so i brought down the rear another click.

well

Maybe you have dented the backing plate and its rubbing on the wheel hub.....
when you were lowering the car....

it can't be much else, if it still makes the noise when jacked up...?

although My Favorite answer is :

the horse shoe shaped clip that holds the pin on the handbrake lever has fallen off and gets jammed and makes a hell of a racket...

I always renew those when i get a VW....

and it happens every year to someone.... lol

You can buy new pins and clips etc... not expensive...

the pins and clips that hold the brake shoes on are other parts that do wear and cause problems when they fall down
into the brake drum....

PS: if You don't know the shape of a horse shoe don't worry, many people don't... lol

those clips are a one time only use... IMHO

Hi Lee,

Can you give me a bit more info on about the pin/horse shoe/hand brake lever, because i've also had issues with handbrake lever, after backing off the cables?

Now when i pull or over extend the lever when pulling on it drops out the rachet and i had to pull it apart and refit/reinstal?

But i did check to see if the brake shoes would still hold as i thought the retaining pins that hold shoes had fallen or causing issue, but dose not feel/sound metallic or scrapping?

More of a clicking type noise in one spot when moving wheel forward and back. seems to be at one point.

Could it be a wheel/lug bolt fouling on a brake shoe ???

I know it sounds odd, but have seen this two separate times... one time was due to a slightly longer bolt (which had always used on the car), the other was with hot-wire style alloys and the washer had been left off of one bolt.

The ratchet thing is pretty common thing to happen if the handbrake is out of adjustment or the cables have stretched....

misread the original post, & already had pre-concieved ideas about what would be causing it at the front.


Sides suggestion is a good one.

Take the wheel off the offending side & rotate the drum then. If it still makes the noise then you have eliminated the wheel bolt as the problem. If it stops the noise, then you've found it.

either way, it sounds like a brake components is contacting the brake drum slightly each time the wheel goes around.
