Exhausted
Ok. So when I rebuilt the top end I fitted a new exhaust. I wanted something a little bit obnoxious, but not over the top. Something that would make
the right noise but do so at a level that did not impact on my long term ability to hear. The budget was relatively tight, so I fitted one of these

Now, if I were to liken my exhaust to a female companion I would suggest that I ended up with the surgically enhanced, botox injected 18 year old
tramp who just screams look at me. A lot of fun for a little while, but not something to take home to meet your mother. This would be fine if I was
18, but I'm not. I think what I am looking for is that hidden beauty; librarian on the outside but wanton tramp in the bedroom ... but back to my
exhaust. I'm looking for a quiet achiever, something that will help performance, make the right noises at the right time, but not scream look at
me.
Does anyone have any experience with/comment on either:

You have not mentioned the size engine that you have in your car, to big and you will take away from the bottom end, i have a 2275 with a 15/8"
exhaust, that is similar to the side winder, it would work on a 1600 but would cause a few problems with the driverability, you will need to size the
exhaust to your engine, the vintage speed is a good exhaust, i have one without the heaters on my convertable, that is a 1775.

You see 100s and 100s of bugs fitted with those twin tip GT mufflers like you fitted yet testing a few years revealed they actually lose power over a
stock muffler 
What's your ground clearance like?
sidewinders tend to hang low and bottom out alot despite being a hide away system.
Vintage speed one would be my choice.

if the exhaust is to big it is not efficient at scavaging the exhaust gases, your size engine could use a exhaust with 1 3/8" primaries.

Stockish erngine I'd recommend the VS. But beware, that one pictured doesn't match the description. Ring VVDS or myself for advice on the correct
system to buy, you'll also save $$

VS on a beetle  . I love mine on my bug.
Just not a massive fan of it on my kombi pancake motor, but then again i favour the upright donk anyway.

Depending on the cam and carbs you wouldn't want to go bigger than 1.5" pipe, otherwise you'll loose the bottom end
Regarding the sidewinder & ground clearance the genuine A1 sidewinder (not Classic Veedubs) has great ground clearance; as does the Vintage speed.
Performance wise there isn't much between the two if you don't want the heater boxes; but the VS system with heaters does let some performance go;
but will let more out than your current exhaust IMHO
I have that classic exhaust as well; and whilst cheap it is also restrictive (better than the EMPI version though); but as I have a 1300 it hasn't
been so much of an issue

Great pics. Seeing a genuine A1 sidewinder blows other sidewinders out of the water. VS if you can good compromise with heaters

I do not understand how the A1 blows the side winder out of the water, it is probably a direct copy without the stupid price, i have all three of them
on my cars and speak from experence.

You cannot go past the VS for quality and value for money.
They fit everytime , there is no messing about trying to get them to squeeze behind the valance ect.

The best thing about the VS system is the ease of adjusting the tappets; the A1 or any system like this requires the removal of the muffler.
A1 does have a V-band option that makes it quick but it costs more.
For me I've got the run heaters to fit inside Historic Regs, but I'm not sure how much performance is lost by using the VS heater box system
compared to an A1 1-3/8" sidewinder system I do know for sure though because of the dyno testing VS has done that all their non heater box systems
are just as good as a merged system.
If you think about it this way; as VS heater box system is just like a Porsche 356 system with a big can and should be good for at least 100hp I would
think before it really becomes an issue
Anyone correct me if I'm wrong

Does anyone know if the VS system have equal lenght headers inside the mufler, internal pics would be nice aswell.

I have the brochure that has the cut-away drawings of the different types. I'm sure they would be on the web site. There are 3 different versions,
Sport, Supa-flow and Merged. The Merge system is the one for all out performance that flows equal to a merged 4-1 system, the header systems are close
when using the Supa-flow muffler and these are available with 42, 44 and 48mm header pipes, the Sport is a 38mm header.
