What type of VW do you dream of owning?

Rikki James's 23 window Barndoor Deluxe. Look at the spec below:-




1954 RHD deluxe

owned by myself. I wanted a very early RHD samba, preferably a barn door, that was fast, safe, as my daily driver, and this is it!if you are a purist then do not read any further, this bus has had some serious modifications done to it.
Obviously the suspension has been lowered, the rear has been IRS'ed and the front beam has had a height adjuster grafted on to it to get the van low, it has also been narrowed 3" each side!

The bus also features porsche 914 disk brakes on all four wheels with golf gti callipers, to attempt to slow the thing down. The wheels are 2 litre porsche alloys, fully polished, I didn't want wheel adapters so they seemed the best solution.

The gear box is also Porsche, a 911 G50 5 speed, with close ratio 2nd and 3rd, man what a headache that was to install!


The engine is a type 4 unit, presently a 2.6 with straight cut timing gears, 48 carb's, major work on the heads, lightened, balanced, race cam, magneto etc. full flow oil, upright porsche fan conversion, carbon fan shroud, and so on....

The body has had some work but I have tried to leave it as it is, rough! Inner and outer sills were replaced, along with both front wheel arches, generally the bus has survived quit well apart from the dents and dings everywhere,
also there were a few things missing.

I probably will restore the bus's paint some day but for the moment I am concentrating on speed! speed! speed!

The engine seemed to take for ever to run in, however that's all history now, just to give you an idea of it's performance you can change in to 5th gear at around 100 mph!! Can't wait to running it up the drag strip at Santa Pod later on this year.

mine, but with everything working.... can stay a ratty, shabby, poobox paintjob...mismatched everything... but i would love all the mismatched bits to be in working order.... ooh ooh and really bright headlights..ooh ooh and windsreen wipers that actually do a good job... yeah! whoohoo.. thats my dream bug!!!! 😎:P

I used to dream of owning a shiny new beetle and when the cabrio came out all the better ! I bought my dream and loved it to bits, now it has all been spoiled and everytime I see my car I think of all the shit I get about it and I get sad. So I am selling my dream and getting out of the VW scene. Anyone interested in buying a 2003 Aquarius blue cabrio then u2u me. when I sell her I am going to buy a Honda Accord, noone gives a toss about them. I can drive completly guilt free !

I learnt to drive in my parents 2 door 411L! Didn't quite look like that one in the pic tho!
They've still got it - I'm trying to convince Dad to drag it out of the garage and bring it to a few shows.

I reckon that a 2 door Type 4 (411) would be my dream car, then perhaps a Westy camper with the SO42 conversion, then a.... ah, dreams! 🙂

woah - If I took it to hart every time someone said something nasty about my bug I wouldn't be anywhere near the VW scene - I've seen your car - Jealousy is the first thing that comes to mind. Thats usually what causes people to put you or your belongings down. Just ignore it. There are plenty of people here that will help you through.

My dream vw would have to be a barndoor sambain sealing wax red over chestnut brown, mint but on its guts with a set of sprintstars.......

I do take things personally. I was very very excited when I got my cabrio ! In fact I have never been so excited in my life ! Then I joined the VW club, after all who would share the same excitment about owing a VW then fellow VW owners ????? BUT it all went pear shaped from there !

Maybe I should have just been one of those VW owners that are just simply VW owners and dont enjoy their car they just drive it, maybe then I wouldn't get P*&^^%$ off !!!!

why sell your dream just cause of what other people say! ...enjoy your bug 🙂 (wish I had enough money to buy a new cab!) Everytime someone bags my car (usually at school) I ignore them cause I know soon I'll be inside it driving it with a big smile on my face 😀 and will laugh at them for all their boring cars! You'll find for just as many nasty club members there's also many nice helpful ones who love all kinds of veedubs..

Thanks ... it is just unfortunate that the nasty ones have left a bad taste in my mouth !!!!!

I was just like you at school. Back then I had a royal blue 68 bug. I used to get bagged like you would not believe my friends in their newish lasers and hyundais etc etc...... but she was my pride and joy !

Well now we are talking about modern vw's, dream off owning a classic and a modern vw for sure, i have a 1999 passat v6 and is fantastic, no problems with it at all, er apart from the speeding fines and now having 11 points, 1 more i'm a gonna, but again one day its gotta ba the W8 for me, pure luxury and style

its the same in most places i was also bagged for wanting a bug, but i got my revenge on the hypocytes as now 6 years out the 3 guys that would bag me the most all have kombis and want my old mans help with them. 😀😀 it all turns out in the end

Just try and focus on what YOU like about YOUR car, the more you bite the more satisfaction you give to whomever has given you a hard time. Your car is a statement about modern design and comfort, and the choice you have made in not becoming part of the everyday herd. The aircooled oldskool is about a passion for antiques, and lovingly restoring or preserving them. To continually bag the vw scene is not the easiest way to gain acceptance regarding the new bug. There are undoubtedly numerous NB owners who are perusuing the forum but are afraid that they will not be accepted. Post like these act as a deterrant. Try to just let it go, as we are not all bad. You will get bagged, as do many others, of all different walks of vw!, trick is to learn to shrug negativity off and just walk away. There are bigger things in the cosmos to worry about. :kiss 🙂
