Dunno how.

The problem with a pic is that most of the money has been spent on things you can't see, you also can't see the previous engines etc.. spending money on an idea that didin't quite work and then re-doing it. Remember this is money spent over a 12 year period and it was a ground up build, with shell of pan, just about every nut and bolt was removed as well as a rebuilt gear box with a few extra tricks. Every thing that went back on the car was new(and man I've got all the paper work to show for it, but I like to torchure myself).

Even now I've got plans for further down the track after I finish the engine for the 4th time. It just dosen't stop it is a sickness I do need help.....help....please.

Well, WAY too much like most of you.
Andy has had well over $20k spent on him (probably $30k, too scared to add it up). This includes purchase, 4 "parts" bus's, enough new spares to keep Andy on the road for many years to come and all the camping gear we used for our round oz trip :-).

My other VW's are not so bad, beetle came for free, and probably spent under $1000 in parts over the last 10 years. Type 3, $300 registered and driving :-).

67'bug: 3.5k and the $1800 motor was the best money I ever spent.

Buggy: bout 25k I think. Still fine tuning too. But I think that's ok considering the cost of some comparable projects. And it was my first full on project...so you always learn the hard (read expensive) way.

p.s. my wife says about the buggy, "we could have bought a new car for that much money", and that's true, but nothing nearly so cool or fast, 😎

i guess including the purchase price ,the cost of all the tools (welders, compressors, spray guns) those things i wouldnt have bought if i didnt own a kombi sand paper and any other materials, it starts to really add up. then for me to be happy i had to buy all the extras like the westy rack, ladder, side step and make every window open.
so far i estimate around the 18k mark ,i still have to build a motor and do the interior , id say i need another 10k . imagine how much it would cost to get someone else to do it for me.
maybe i have made a few mistakes along the way and it could be better in areas but f--k it feels good to know that i am the only one to touch this car.
around 7k to build a bug wow i could have 3 and be running a wedding car buisiness

I'm not going to add up all the reciepts (which I have kept) as I'm sure that it will scare me!

...but, round figures, heres the list:

$2k for the EFI
$2.5k for the engine
$1k (so far) for the pan
$500 for baja kit (includes complete donor car)
$ not much for the body - but I haven't really started this bit yet!

...and thats just the major stuff, could probably add another $1000 for the little bits and pieces that I have hidden in the shed and have forgotten about. Won't even try to put an estimate on the time I have spent:duh

Lucky the car was given to me for nothing....

Hey Y2K, can I guess from you signature that you have been investing in CHIPS? (of the silicon variety...that would plug into a certain cars computer?) Sounds a bit fishy to me :puke

In the 7 years I have spent around $5 or $6 grand so far on 36hp rebuild ,gearbox rebuild pan blasted and resprayed black Maico disc brakes,Judson,Fram filter, rear popouts and other bits and pieces and I still need to paint the body and retrim the car I think another $8 to $10 should cover it.

What I would like to know Where everyone get the money to spend big dollars on their cars everyone must be doctors ,lawers or have great paying jobs
