Oh oh, here we go again. Let's not turn this into a another excuse to criticise people for their favourite car, whether NB or otherwise. The whole idea of slagging people for their choice of cars is ridiculous anyway as it's a subjective topic. There is no logic to it. I mean we all like 30 year old cars which struggle to get to anywhere near 100HP, yet I bet none of us would change our minds just because somebody said VWs suck because they're old and slow.
One could argue that driving an old VW is for fashion victims, as if we were to make a logical choice based on sensible things like power output, fuel economy, service intervals and availability of parts etc etc we'd all be driving Hyundai excels or some other hunk of S!@t like that. Anyway, rant over.
If I was given the $50K I would buy an R32 and chip in the extra $15K myself. If it was a max of $50K, probably a Bora or a Passat.
Ain't nothin' like the wind in your hair.
Bla, I wouldn't want to spend that much on a new car. I could fully restore who knows how many old vee dubs for 50 grand.
But, since someone else asked what they should spend 50K on... I'd think about a subie. You know, boxers and 4WD. Or, a diesel european something. Depends on where you're driving, what you like doin', doesn't it.
Id beg for a bit more and get a Lotus Elise. I drove a mates a little while ago and they are soooo much fun. Like a motorbike on 4 wheels.
A Toyota Camry with lots of options, then go out & crash it really good,
with the insurance payout I will then go out & buy something old & nice,
this still complies with the guidelines of the question😀
Please, I need drivers side window regulator (winder mechanism) for my '54
hmm 50g....turbo beetle ?

Founding member of the C'town Rat-Pack

I'd spend 40k on a classic Jag 50s/60s and keep 10k for any problems that would occur.Real leather, real wood and a nice straight 6 up front and at the end it would still be a classic.
Actually I think Barls is right spend it all on a beetle and go over the top!
Subaru Liberty GT or 3.0RB depending if you like turbo4 or 6. They have them at the new Osborne Park Subie dealership so you can drop in.

If it was my money: I'd get a Toyota Prius.
If it was someone else's: I'd get a New Beetle Cabrio and a Gold card with a rental company for all the days I'd need a hire car whilst the New Beetle was in the shop.
