I watch a few different classic car markets, and have noticed that people selling restored splits seem to want extraordinary money for their cars when selling...

If you rebuild-restore an old Porsche, you do it knowing you will lose between 50-70% on the sale..... It seems this isnt the case with Splits..?.. Are they really selling for 30K+....?....

Or are they just advertised at that price?

And please dont anyone with a restored Split for sale get offended or upset, I am aware of the commitment required...

Just promoting discussion and learning a little bit more.....

o.k.
No offence taken.
Splits are very expensive to restore and 99% of the people who do them do them to keep.
Now if they are offered the right money they will sell them as everything is for sale!

To restore a split it costs about $20,000, now that is how much it cost me, this does NOT include 3and a half years of my time, I did all the work myself apart from the welding,
I got a quote for straightening the body and painting in 2pac, it was $15-$18,000.
Now as I said that didnt include welding, so if you add $20,000 + $18,000. You end up with $38,000, this is if you took it to a panel shop, dont forget that they would also charge you for chasing up all the parts, some which you have to wait years until they come on the market.
I waited 2 years for a rear ribbed bumper.

The thing with porsches is that there are a hell of a lot more on the road than splits, More availabe the cheaper they are.
With splits I know there are only a handful in Australia that have been restored correctly, I dont mean just given a paint job,

Hope this answers your question,

By the way, I was offered $30,000 by 2 seperate people here in Australia and 2 people in the U.K. for mine a month ago, I turned them down as I realised I could never do another and didnt want to get rid of mine.
In the U.K. there are more people after them and they are buying left hand drive ones that need full resto's for 5,000 pounds, about $13,000, then they are paying to get them restored, that is why ours are a hell of a lot cheaper for them to buy them and ship them over there.

I know of a split that got $27500 and that was 2 years ago, Some have gone overseas and were sold for $50,000.
Its all about availability and demand.

Cheers
Dave

Makes you feel sorry for the guys that spend $15,000 or so on an old holden or ford that is worth half that on the market when they are finished. Then I suppost you don't do it to sell and make money.

Further to what 57kombi said, I'd consider $20,000 a budget price to restore a Bay properly. A split would cost a lot more, and being older require more work.
Besides you look cooler in a split than a porsche :rudolf

i did see this camper aswell, it was an original paint low mile bus with all the extras , if it was what the people advertised true to there word it would be hard to find another like it so in that respect id say it would be worth the money.
but we all know original buses not all but most original paint buses are in the past used by date and need alot of work and $$$$$$$ to get back to there former glory.
i have invested a shit load of time and $$$$$$ into my bus aswell with the intention of keeping it and wouldnt sell it for to much less than what dave was asking and not because its better or worse but because that is what i would start to consider for my time effort and money invested .
i must say i wouldnt pay 30k for someone elses creation id rather buy one and personalise it to my own taste. and if i did buy a big $$$$$ bus of someone it would have to be a very hard to find model like a 54 delux or bd dc then i would still be up for the resto costs, probably earlier buses 50_63 would fetch these high prices before a 64_67 like i own but mine isnt for sale and it were it would be no less than 30k, and if i had no interest i would put it back in the shed
just my 2c
cheers darren

No offence taken by the way but like already has been said, to get a splitty or Bay to a fully restored standard costs a lot of money and time, as with any vehicle.
Paint and panelbeating $8000 - 10000 minimum
Rubbers/seals $1500
Upholstery $2000 - $3000
Mechanics $2000
Electrics $1000
Misc items $1000
Accessories $2000
Then add on time for stipping and rebuilding, which takes an eternity
It literally took me a year pretty much full on and loads of time off work sourcing parts and rebuilding.
I have heard of Splitty's selling for $30,000 no problem. I have also heard of basket cases selling for $10000. Even heard of an 11 window unrestored bus being sold for $38000, ok it did have IRS, reco engine and a huge kitchen sink.
But since starting ClassicVW(pacific) we have found that more and more people are taking the time and making the effort to keep thier beloved vehicles on the road, whether it is Ratty or fully restored these Old Skool beauties are not made anymore and it is great to hear that one more is being put back on the road.
So if I was to sell mine I would only take $30,000, thats not being greedy or arrogant as I would also want it to go to a good home.
And its not just T2's, Type 3 prices are starting to rise due to popularity only a few years ago they were being thrown away.
Anyway I must cease this rambling
Cheers
Roy

easy to blow 20k on a split... just gotta look at my dcab coming. i wouldnt be game to count what i have spent on bus80y. but i dont think i would get back my worth, so i dont think they are inflatted. and the are rarer, more unique and more desirable tahn most old cars.....

and you can have more fun with more gals/mates in a splitty over a porsche anyday. :P 😎

with my bus it cost me around about

3k paint , did all prep myself then had a pro lay thhe final coat down , final colour was 1k just paint
4k to but the bus
3k in tools sand papers spray guns welders sand papaer etc
7k in accessories so far , safaris front side and rear, westy rack 4 bow , stainless ladder , polished side step 4 new pop outs
1k on the rims
$1500 on chrome
$5500 on motor
$1650 on ball joint front beam with discs
$250 for type 3 box
$150 for straight axle conversion
this is not including steering wheel, interior and time
imagine if you paid someone to do the work the costs would be huge , i suppose i have added alot of accessories put in a big motor , and added tools and purchase price of the bus so if you take these things into account its pretty cheap

the reason i have added all these things is because i would still have the money for all those things if i didnt have the bus
there is a shit load of hidden costs
just what cost me
cheers darren

Yes, I guess you could say the bait has been taken, but I dont know a great deal about Splits.. Just that they would look splendid as a tow car for a vintage racecar... I saw a few painted as racecar trucks at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK a year or so back... And have been inspired....

Thanks to those that replied, Possibly some of the most valuable info on this thread regarding prices to rebuild, etc...

Cheers

Lots of people just dont realise the amount of time and expense it takes to do a bus, just in prep to spray it took me 12 months, Just ask Jim how long its taking him to strip his bus back.
You can buy a bus that looks good for around $6-$10,000, but it will not have had the work done on it,
It will proberbly just have a nice shiny coat of paint covering loads of bog.
It still amazes me that people buy these types of buses and then start restos on them, buy one for $10,000 and it will still need the same work as the $1 - $2,000 bus,
The paint will have to come off anyway when you do the sills and front, doglegs etc.

Most who have buses tend to keep hold of them, because they know what it takes to do one.

Geez.. I'd be interested in that bus with the indicators too.. Nothing like a Barny, regardless of indicators..

There is a lot of cost involved, as per any car resto.. We would have spent 40 hours or so on just the outside alone, and we aren't finished yet. Now think about how much $$ you normally get for that 40 hours..

There is several angles to look at this from, but at the end of the day, it isn't cheap.

It takes a lot of money and time and effort to restore any vintage car correctly regardless of make or model.

i think 20-30k for a restored split is not a bad price considering you have a head turner that will only get more valuable or you could spend the same money on a new car that looks like 3/4 of all the other cars out there and that will rapidly decrease in value.

Problem is that many resto's are not actually resto's. A paint job and a tart up is not a restoration. It then is not (in my opinion) worth the 30k type price. Most Classic cars given a real resto are worth good $$$. Most ppl dont make money when they sell them.

These hippie busses have an image with them that many ppl who drove them the first time around the clock now want to recapture now the kiddies have gone/ or are out of booster seats etc. These ppl are usually cashed up too. So the days of a 23 window with another for spares for a carton of beer are gone.

Still doesnt make most sows ears a silk purse worth 30k.

Shudder the thought that a bus with SILICON in it is worth 30k! Tell him hes dreamin! (pokes 57kombi with sharp stick.... 😉 )
