I do realize that to Moderate all threads on this forum would be a huge task. I remember last time there was talk of not having the 4 sale and wanted sections because of the problems, this would of been a sad day.
so has it come to the stage of "your on your own" in these sections ?
the way some threads end up makes me think some people would go through a trading post paper and ring up a seller and tell them "you've got to be joking"...
like I said at the start that it is a huge job looking after the forum and I'm very happy its on line but can some one of the Moderators let us know if the this is how its going to be.
can people just bag buyers or sellers even if it looks like their not interested in the item ?
...I hope this makes sence:P
I guess I'm after a Moderaters awnser.

very greatfull of this forum

It's true that it's hard to review every thread - there are more than 200 every day, and around a thousand new posts.

We can't do much without the assistance of our members - if there's a problem with a post, please use the "Report" button. This will report the post to the forum's moderators and the admins like me.

We'll review it and take appropriate action.

Just a thought , would it be the go to make the for sales, seller post only , that is no replies buy buyers to the original thread? and then any questions could be sent U2U and answered answered via U2U ? per haps questions and replies could appear attached to the post but only the original seller could add to the thread?
Dont know if this is feasable sensible or possible just throwing it out there.
It seems that the very vast majority of replies to original threads are trivial or unnessesary and genuine buyers should not be dissadvantaged by needing to approach the seller via U2U or phone if the seller supplies details?

It is a drama.. no denying it. But they are usually repeat offenders, and continue to skate a thin line..

Mitchells idea is one that will be considered and persued. Each thread to be closed, and questions U2U'd to the seller. If they are legit, maybe the answers could be posted again by the seller, eg. eBay.

Poster only permissions are possible. However, this significantly changes the style of the place. I'd have to take the other mod's opinions before putting it into action.

having a 'no post' buy/sell would also remove teh 'first in' option... dont know what peoples thoughts are on it. ive always thought it a good thing, if people abiding are/were fair, but saying this i know first hand its not always the case.

Comments detracting from a sale item ie; The photo has been photoshopped.. or thats not worth the money.. Are an annoyance and should be discouraged.. I wouldn't want my chances of selling something (Its happened) that was a genuine offer.. being corrupted by an unwelcome comment.. HOWEVER.......................

In the "no reply to post" suggested environment.. What would happen if I put up for sale an item that was falsely described.. or way over the market price.. or had history with another AVD member.. In the new world there would be no right of response from anyone.

So we are now in a world of "caveat emptor" and the buyer has to take all the risk without advice from other forum members..

I have noticed a surge in membership from new dubbers to the forum... They often want advice on buying a dub..

If I was to fire up a quick ad that offered shit deals on dubs.. In the new world, the older and experienced dubbers would be gagged from offering a word of caution to the inxeperienced.. The "caveat emptor" world is a cold and unforgiving place to be..

And now we have lost the beautiful VW culture from our forum.. we are left with the cold harsh commercial reality.. Question could then be asked as to the reason for the forum in the 1st place..

Personally I love it when I post a buy request and someone replies with.. "don't buy that.. they are half the price up the road"..

now i wouldn,t normally comment on these types of posts, but first dibs seems a bit of a crock any way. i've seen a couple of posts where first dib sales have fallen through and in the mean time genuine buyers have committed funds elsewhere (having missed out) and cosequently missed out when the post suddenly appears again weeks after the supposed sale. some times i avoid posting and go straight thru u2u , and later some body types "u2u sent". how do real buyers know wether contact has been made or if their just stalling..etc....i definetly agree that the sensless bagging of "for sales" is stupid and unnecesary and noticed its been getting out of hand. and im not bagging two guns here i just used his quote because it reflected what my 2 cents worth was about.

my 2 cents...

I think ur right, bagging someone who is selling something is hard. But if it was left to u2u would that end up being more personal, or would they stop??

Perhaps if someone is getting bagged, those of us who disagree with the bagging should tell the other person to stop, as a matter of courtesy for the seller?

Surely there are more people who disagree with adlib bagging, than those who are doing it.

In addition, even if ppl are bagging, surely it makes that person look silly as apposed to the seller (and no I am not condoning it ) but if I were a seller, I'd rather everyone got to see what a fool the person bagging the product was, as apposed to just having the person quietly bringing me down in u2u.

But honestly, perhaps if we just report it, it will reduce.

d4 getting off soap box now.

cheers

I agree with stenguns.
I have recently made comments about someone selling a split, The seller has only ever posted anything in the for sale section and has never contributed anything to any onther post.
The reason I made the comment was because there have been quite a few new members who have been posting that they would like to buy a split kombi and have admited that they dont know anything about them.
The split advertised is so obviously over priced, I am worried that a new member might buy it and then realise that they made a big mistake and then leave the scene.
Now some might say that it is non of my business but I believe the forum was started so we could help each other and letting people get ripped off is not doing that.

I am asking for guidance from other members and moderators on " did I do the right thing"

Cheers
Dave

The first place I come to get price advice on anything associated with VW is this forum.

Before I joined AVD I bought a part out of the trading post and then mentioned something about the price here, only to be told I was taken for a ride around the block A FEW times.

If someone is selling something that is grossly overpriced or has given the wrong information then I would want to warn someone about it. Not that I know jack sh*t about anthing VW but if it was something I knew alot about I would be the first one to say, hey mate, that's not right.

As long as it's done politely then that is all that matters.
GO MANLY!!

Is this thread directed at you DAVE ???
Suely the whole point of a forum is to have your say, if someone gets upset by that, then they should not post or give as much back.

When I first started this business in October I was getting slagged off every day from some forum members, although I had been a member for a year prior, but it didn't bother me and gave as much back, I certainly do not hold grudges.
As I remember Dave was the one of the many warning people 'buyer beware'. Now I get a fair bit of praise from him, where did you get that delux trim from???

It adds to the fun of having a forum if someone can add thier 2 cents worth without being regulated or censored, otherwise it would get rather dull and boring.
The forum should be like we are all sitting round the table in the local pub, having a discussion. Most things written on here are only what would be said around the pub table, however due to you not seeing facial expressions, certain things may be taken out of context.

I placed my Splitty for sale and it turned into a running thread of totally un-related subjects, do I care? not a Jot.

However if something is said thats not appreciated then thats what the "report" button is for.

Thats only my opinion, for what its worth anyway.

I think if someoen has a negative comment they should leave it out. There seem to be a lot of grudges on the forum between some people.

The reason I and a few other forum members were a bit cynical about you classicvw(pacific) is that you just came on the forum and advertised yourself as your first post. I mean this is an internet forum and I'm pretty cynical of people just coming on and advertising. It would have been different if you had established yourself already and mentioned it. No hard feelings, I just felt it may have not been the best way to start on the forum. No hard feelings 🙂

Oh here we go again :-(

Definately no hard feelings from here either, most of the people were genuinely scepticle when they saw me selling items at half the price they were buying them for, I would be scepticle too.
What I was trying to say above was that some of the things said were very hurtful argh!!! and I may have been easily offended, but I wasn't and it kept my posts up in the top flight, so whos complaining :beer

Thanks Roy.
I think.

I comment on what I want to, I do not slagg people off,
What I say on this Forum I would say to peoples faces.
I have just had a U2U from Kombi Kid, a moderator, stating that everyone is tired of my negative comments towards other peoples splitties.
As far as I can remember I have encoraged people to get them on the road, I have given advise when asked and even given parts to people at no charge.

Yes I am vocal but that is me, what I type is what you get in person.
I have only ever stated that I dont like converted panel vans .
That is my opinion and I stick to that.
I am not changing my opinion for anyone, that is what the nazis tried to do.
Bit harsh I know but a forum is for people to comment and express them selves.

All I have ever done is try to advise people on the value of splits, if you remember Kombi Kid, you tried to buy a split off E-bay that had rust in the dash for $10K and the seller would not let you see it until you paid your money.
I advised that it was worth about $2K and others agreed with me.
I do not think I know everything about splits but I will try and help those that know less than me by advising them.

Kombi , you also state that I should keep my 20cents worth to myself, so you dont think its wrong if a newbie buys something for a hell of a lot more than its worth.
If people advertise for free on a forum they open themselves up for comments be good or bad, that is the risk they take.
I remember when you first came to this forum you asked for advice, imagine if no one gave you any, would you still be here.

My rant over, it seems that members dont mind comments being made but moderators do.

Cheers
Dave

24 posts and over 300 views in one day, that says it all, people like to let off steam, have a bich (in the nicest sense of the word) how many heated discussions has anyone had in a pub (hey I'm not an alcaholic by the way)
Some threads are even started to get the discussions started, its great, if everyone was nice to each other and lovey lovey, it would be bland.
If I put on a post asking for a 23 window split in excellent condition, for less than $500 I expect to get ripped

Is it because we can only think of so much to talk about volksies and would like a change.
Problem is too many take it to heart and it will get deleted soon.

Okay,

I just want to say for the record, I know I have seen Dave bag some ppl, or more the item they have for sale, but I have also seen him encourage ppl.

I knwo when I first came I needed help, and ppl like him, herbie and bronze were the ones offering advice on what to look for.

I have read heaps of stuff here, and think he knows at least a little something about the cars we have. And even if he is a little neg sometimes, mostly he is okay.

And if he is mean to someone, just tell him to bug off. I'm sure he won't take it personally. I am sure he understand that some critisisms can cut close..too close.

But if u hate confrontations, just report him.

And for the record I do love ya dave...u make things interesting. I also love ur ride. But if u hassel me...EVER....I'll report ya!
