With tyre sizes, does it matter what size I shove on the beetle? I know its a stupid question, but Im just curious if Id slowly destroy my axles or torsion bars or whatever by having a 17" wheel as opposed to a 14".

do a quick search, there have been several discussions about tyre sizes recently.

Whats more crucial is the mounting off-set of the wheels.
Too inboard an offset will cause premature wear to steering and suspensions components.

RTA stipulates you can't change your wheel track by more than 25mm. If you can fit them in and you keep your overall diameter less than +/- 15mm and you keep the track as above you should be ok. I got 17 x 7 inch rims with 215/45 tyres...worked out to +4mm track( ET 35 backspacing), -10mm diameter.
