nowaday i intend to name my pets after shakespearian characters... my black cat shall be othello, my bird iago, my fish shall be king lear and my scorpions will be gonerill and regan.
oh and another wirter i love... dickens! i love great expectations, anyone else?
OK for me fiction...Thomas Hardy...he paints pictures with words...I can smell the dew covered flowers....feel the wind...imagine the hardship.....oh....and feel the 'excitement'....he has a way with words that man...
I love to read and be able to see pictures...if I writer can't paint then I don't read fiction....and if a non fiction writer doesn't get my interest then I don't finish his book..I do have lot's of unfinished books...
My husband never left a book unfinished....he devoured them....and had so much general knowledge...like me he read all sorts...OK not the arty ones so much....fiction and politics
anyone here also a fan of poetry? im loving keats and coleridge, romantic poets of course!
yay for pod and the hitch hikers guide! read it years ago, great fun series. the 'dirk gently's holistic detective agency' series is awesome as well. my current MSN screen name is "to fly, all you must do is forget to fall" 😎

yes, my P.E. teacher bore the name Mr. Arthur, and thus it was always arthur dent for him.
we also named our art teacher slartibartfast
For people who paint beautiful pictures I love Don De Lillo "White Noise", also Jhumpa Lahiri, Arundhati Roy (the God of small things), Michael Oondatje (In the skin of a Lion). Also an Australian... Tim Winton's "dirt Music". As for poetry, I LOVE W.H. Auden and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. For mythical type books I like George MacDonald, C.S. Lewis, Tolkien. Non Fiction I like reading disturbing books like "The New Rulers Of The World" by John Pilger, and "Hegemony or Survival" by Noam Chomsky. I loved "Sophie's World" by Jostien Gaarder. It is a great overview of philosophy throughout history.
"Tell him 'We've already got one'"
Yeah
love Hitchhikers. Got the DVDs of the series now, but the radio shows were little different from the TV series, still good to listen to though.
but have to thank a psycho exGF for introducing me to Terry Pratchett 🙂
Aside form that, just VW mags :P
'Ah, whatever................'
I love classics. Dickens and Austin are two of my loves....my favourite book of all time is Lord of the Rings, I know its not really a "classic" but I think it should be considered one.
At the moment I've started on Don Quixote and War and Peace keeps begging to be read, but with so many trashy quick-read crime novels on the market, I keep putting the harder ones off...Particularly while I'm trying to study law, that takes a great deal of concentration.
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it enjoy the view
law takes the fun out of everything... :blush
during my schooling years many moons ago i read of mice and men, the great gatsby, pride and prejudice, brave new world, 1984, animal farm. many more. i couldnt believe it when people complained about having to read! the art of the written word is lost on my generation and it saddens me.
fortunately there are a few out there who still cling eagerly to their hordes of books (like me)!
I read aussieveedubbers
I dont think that the art of the written word is lost, I think that it has merely been superceded by the visual component. A lot of people of this generation still find books enjoyable, but sometimes its easier for some to just go and watch the movie.....I never do though, the movie often ruins the book. One good example was "The Count of Monte Cristo" the movie was nothing like the book....I left the theatre feeling cheated and robbed.

19th Century literature, High Literature, Thesis.
George Orwell, Brett Easton Ellis, Italo Calvino, these are a few of my favourite things.
I despise Dan Brown. "The Da Vinci Code" was the worst literary work I have ever read.
Reality leaves alot to the Imagination
Manuals, practical guides and other techy crap. I liked to read fiction when the days had more hours in them.
