Henry Spicak was going to build mine and refused to look at any box other than the 3.88. SSP.
Matt
i have just replaced a stuffed swingaxle box with a box built by leons motors welded 1 and 2 superdiff heavy sideplate

Hey choppa - troy is now running porsche CV's I believe. His t2 cv conversion was very interesting - its actually a re drilled t1 stub axle (such that you can bolt a t2 CV up to it). I didnt think you could do that, but apparently you can.
hey condor. is this in a beetle? if so i wouldnt mind talking about the conversion. and how are the launches on this transmission?

choppa wrote:In my opinion you should get your box built by someone who knows.
And who has access to parts.
The best racing gears you can get in the US are sold by weddle racing gears,
guess wherethey are from? Albins, right here in OZ!
NOT US stuff.
so basically buy a ssp box. get a zf lsd. and a full albins gear set, stronger side plate...and what else?
Anthony
post it to my address
:P
62 Ragtop Herbie with a little extra oomph.
haha sure thing herbie. just give me the money to buy the parts for two of those boxes then i will post you one and keep one for postage fee 😉
haha did u know there is nother herbie movie coming out? beetle looks sweeeet.
but really. back to topic
ssp box, zf lsd, full albins gear set, stronger side plate and what else?

More HP to beat me off the lights

Cv's....but you can change them in the car..see how long it takes to shatter the stock ones..
So that is it...start ringing around and get some parts.
Matt
no use going porsche cv look at the ridiculous prices on them. most of the off road vw guys will use them because they put them through hell vibration will kill anything ask mudbashing about the cost new shafts cv's, really not worth it, just stick with t2 cv they are cheap and can be found anywhere
YOU HAVE JUST BEEN DAKED
don't worry it's a VW thing
try leons in brissy.
From what i can remember it was about $350 (could be up to 450) for each custom gear. + box rebuild + diff (approx 450) + side plate. if you want tmore xact costs u2u me, (as its not fair to put up prices for public review)
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!
Go hard or go home!!!!
I've seen a few VWs with universal driveshafts for high HP applications, although a mate reckons CVs are actually stronger in a straight line than a uni joint. I have also heard it said that kombi CVs will handle up to 400rwkw. apparently they uses them in sports-sedans.
BTW, offroad guys only use porsche CVs for the extra angles they allow, they are only negligably stronger than kombi ones.
more hp to beat you off the lights neil?..
nah. ill just launch at 7k 🙂
how much power ya car got?
haha

I dont know >when I fit the cooler & the boost controler I let you know .

Most importantly get someone who knows what they are doing to build it for you, there are a lot of little tricks in building a gearbox that lasts. Id Reccomend shimo who now works at dunhams in wollongong. He's built the boxes for some VERY high powered VW's and knows his stuff.
hey Shifty, you now at uncle Bob's???
If so, drop a 911 on Christian for me...
Matt
Yep, Ill do my best on drop request.
He isnt the smartest kid on the block...I am going to play some midnight ghostly pranks on him in the next few weeks... you will hear about them..
Hey 71...Are you sure your gonna be legal in WA?
I don't think you will be, but I am problably wrong.
I'm sure you can rego just about anything, it just may cost you a packet.
I remember when I had a chat to the dude who built that white 12A Turbo bug, he reckon under no circumstance could he upgrade to a 13B turbo...And he did a load of work under that car! Hate to see you blow your bucks on this project.
But if you have looked into it, and all is good....Just get into it and see what happens!!
Make sure they involve spiders. He likes spiders.
yeah all would be legal if i get the right work done.
nothing is illegal in WA providing your car is able to handle it.
Anthony
I have a single side plate super bug box and new hd clutch with an hydralic slave cyl set up $250.00 if you need it

Do you guys know what a 13Bt weighs versus say a type 4 motor?
be interesting to figure that out too, just for handlings sake.
get on google and put in engine weights and you,ll get aircraft sites and they list allsoughts of motors and some gearbox weights
Found these figures,
Mazda 13B race, 242 lb (109 kg), 2-rotor race motor, with accessories,
Vs,
VW Type IV: 311 lb (141 kg)
Now it probably doesn't include the radiator and coolent, but....
mmm, food for thought
how are you getting around the engine cc size to orignal weight of the car when they multiply cc in a rotary
we do not have that rule here in western australia.
Anthony
neil. what condition is the box in? and is that 3.88 or the weird 4.125?
Anthony
If it is a single side plate then it is 3.88. Pop over and grab it anthony.
