This goes back to what I said before about a "Nationals" being 'owned' by a club. Club VeeDub do a good show - they get a good turn up and work at hard at putting the show on so this is by no means a slight against them.

A "Nationals" by definition is a show/comp that embraces and represents an entire scene. Most "nationals" events are the combined efforts of a number of clubs/groups. A "Nationals" event showcases emerging trends, historical influences, the best, the average and the horrible.

A "nationals" that is 'our event' is a nationals in name only.

Look at other "nationals' events. The event is put on not by one club. The trophies are usually sponsored by all the clubs attending and often even the 'lone wolves'. The organisation and amenities are provided by groups and clubs cooperatively. The VW scene IS big enough for this and still have room and support for clubs to have their own shows.

Rats do against the grain. That is the point. They subvert the show system and expose the supposed objective judging of the show system. However a piece of shit with some rims is not a rat. It might be ratty, but not a rat. But that's the problem with terms - the definition changes. Subjective judging (some may say it is already used in all classes) or popular choice are the only ways to measure cars that do not fit the show judging formula.
Matt, thats a bit harsh about a piece of shit...

But i agree on the rest...about the "nationals"...

As for going against the grain, variety is good, keeps people interested and coming back. They ask themselves "what will be next?" Keep people wondering and interested...

I love some of the perfectly restored vehicles, the stockies and customs (some i hate), I love matts 55, but I also love the original full of history vehicles. What makes matts split even sweeter is the history behind it, the big arse motor sticking out the back, painting it in the backyard, his background in toranas (crazy).

I love the underground movement in the VW scene that goes against the grain...anyone can pay big bucks and restore a car or buy one restored, you just need a well paid job, but you cant buy history and a good story or a bit of fun and games...enjoy

In the UK, where early Golfs are respected, there is a fad going around where guys applied bulk paint stripper to there Mk1's and 2's to the point where there was no paint at all. They then allowed them to rust, with a lovely matt mottled ochre colour covering the whole car. I dont think the netionals should cater for this, either.
There is no doubt that the rat style can be attractive, but the best rats IMO are those with good original paint dumped low and cleaned for the show. In this instance the rat thing would surely be catered for through the best daily driver category.
Just my thoughts... Club VW cant cater fully to every single niche group that starts up or exists within the plethora of interest sub groups within the VW scene.

...cos there are a plethora of them...

Like I said, the best rats are covered by the daily driver category. As an organiser of the Canberra weekend, I would find it difficult to add a category to cater for that niche. That said, it would be a shame for rats to be unrepresented at the nationals.

No they can't but a collectively organised nationals event can. Look at the ASRF Street Rod Nationals or the Hot Rod Rumble both of which were held on the same weekend.

Both had trophies/categories (both subjectively and objectively judged) sponsored or organised by different clubs. Both had categories supported by lone wolves. Neither show was 'owned' by any one club - the ASRF organised the Nationals but didn't take ownership of it. There is no talk of going against the grain as the grain IS THE ENTRANTS AND SPECTATORS.

If there are so many niche groups and interests then maybe it is time for the Nationals to become the (veedub) Nationals rather than the Club VeeDub Nationals. The Club VeeDub show even if still called the nationals wouldn't be threatened by such a show. The calendar is wide open and I'm sure Club VeeDub would benefit as much from a Nationals as much as other clubs, lone wolves and the scene in general.

Club VeeDub could still host it and still get the profits, but other clubs could have some input and a variety of different events on the day...

Is it? A rat isn't some decaying car pulled from under a tree.

Frenzix and Ben Livingstone had probably the defining rats there. One a barn find, made roadworthy (even if the bling blings have been added) and the other a car made largely by the owner using whatever could be scrounged up to make a cool, working car.

A car that was paraded around with doors flapping and involving a realistic danger to spectators and surrounding cars should have been escorted out of the venue. If anything had have happened with that thing the insurers wouldn't have touched the claims. It was the height of disrespect to the organisers and spectators.

I have to quietly agree with the last part of this statement. It was also sad to see an old bus treated so appallingly.

Cmon guys, it was beyond repair, did you bother to look at it?

And as far as i understand, the organisers gave permission for a drive around the complex, no one was in any danger or their cars...just a bit of fun...

So Appallingly! Should it be Crushed then, or left in a shed to turn to dust, as you could see the car was passed restoration, get it out there and show it off, not piss it off

ITS A VW
