Please for the love of God, DO NOT take out your frustration and anger out on the checkout/customer service person! IT PISSES ME OFF! Even managers have NO SAY WHATSOEVER in thier price usually, so whineing to them won't help either. Nearly all petrol stations make very little on the fuel itself. Maybe 2-3 cents if they're lucky. Go back 20 years or so and most petrol stations had lots of automotive related items and not so big store areas, now the supermarket style is the only way to make money.
The oil price is only one of three major and many minor factors involved in the price of fuel. The US dollar to Aus is also another factor as well as the Singapore spot price.

WTF i cried , cause i don't look at the prices usually.. got to the till and he asked for like $100 .. crazy.. sorry back to the topic

Hey you are spot on Boozer.
I am sick to death of all this why is the price so exspensive?, when is the price comming down?, you guys are blood sucking pigs, you're just gready C%#ts.
Do me a favour, when you come into a servo and you feel like having a winge about it, keep your mouths shut till you get back in your cars and drive off.
For the last week and a half our sites have been paying $1.17per litre for ulp fuel and been selling it between 106.9 and 109.9 for ULP.
we had a delivery at a cost of 1.23 per litre tonight and we were selling it at 1.14 a litre and still people seem to think its the servo's ripping you off.
a service station makes its money from instore sales only. very rarely does it make anything off the fuel, its just there as a service for you, so it draws you in to buy products in store.
ok i have had my little spit now and i feel better.

I heard something on the radio this morning about the price going down about 7c a litre within the week ? I wonder if that was for real or just a fantasy ????
I have saved stacks of money as I drive my work car as much as possible and let them pay the bill !!!!!
🤘
pod, it is true that the oil companies have bought out all the plans for water-powered engines, but thats just so that they will have the monopoly on engine design when their current money maker runs out.
im sure there are some physics/engineering departments in many universities around the globe that have secretely built their own water powered engines, so lets hope the monopoly isnt going to be so one-sided this time around!
just an aside: my sister and i were talking about doofs the other day (big festivals in the bush for 3 days with loud music!) and we found it amusing to point out how many supposedly hardcore environmentally outspoken hippies drive kombis.
last time i looked, the kombi was a gas guzzling pollution producer just like the rest of our oldskool veedubs... wouldnt it be more environmentally friendly to buy a corolla?
much as i would love to take my cherry to a doof when shes fixed up, i dont think i'll ever be able to afford the price of petrol brisbane-melbourne and back, not to mention the damage to the undercarriage and suspension from all those rocks and potholes...
sorry that was a bit off topic

Thankyou. As I said there, I don't know when the price is going down or up untill we get a phone call or the competition goes up or down. Crying to me will just unleash the WRATH OF ME! Everyone start producing ethanol and convert over to it (I have the website instructions) and stop being big babies.

OK, for those that dont know me so well, I am an Engineer and I work for BP at their Perth Refinery, so I have a rough idea about fuel specs and pricing arguments etc.
Firstly, to set the record straight on a few mistruths in this thread;
1) - Y2K - Perth's fuel specs are equal to the European 2003 specs, and almost equal to California's CARBGAS spec (the strictest fuel spec in the world). The rest of Australia is not far behind perth (perth specs are so strict as we depend on groundwater, thus cannot tolerate things like MTBE and other oxygenates in fuel because of the contamination risk). Thus your comment that 'our quality of petrol is crap, and our premium grade equivalent to third world petrol' is incorrect, and ill informed. Sure, our premium grades (BP Ultimate 98, Shell Optimax (98 RON) and Caltex Vortex) are not quite the Japanese 102 - 104 RON fuels, but in terms of quality, what come out of the refineries here is as good as you will get anywhere on earth. What the individual servo's do with their tanks can be a whole other matter though........ it is not unheard of for them to mix and match, thin out fuels with Toluene, Ethanol or other such liquids. This is not a reflection on the oil companies, as very few of the servo's are actually owned and run by the parent oil company - most are franchises.
2) Our fuel prices are the second cheapest in the developed world. Only the US is cheaper. Places like the Phillipines, Indonesia etc can afford to sell their fuel cheaper as they dont have as strict a fuel spec - ie, WA diesel must meet 50parts per million sulfur by 2006, the Phillipines / Indonesia / Sth Africa etc are all still on 5000 ppm. The more stringent a fuel spec (higher RON, MON, lower Sulfur, lower Benzene, restricted oxygenates etc), the more it costs us as a refinery to make.
3) 50c / L is a joke. We had it once, but dont ever expect to see it again. A little maths for you all - 1BBL of oil, at $57 US = ~$80 AUS for 115L of oil. Thus, the price of oil is currently $0.69 / L. Sixty Nine cents per liter for oil, and you think we can then refine it and get it to the public for 50c per liter ? How ? It costs us over $100million a year in costs just to keep our refinery running and operating. We spend over $2 billion a year to buy enough crude to meet our supply contracts - we make about 5% profit on this, at the refinery end.
Boozer has the right of it - in short, our fuel prices are set by a market parity principle, which is primarily dependant on US / AUS exchange rate (because all crude trades are done in $US), price of oil (obviously) and then the Singapore spot price + freight (as Singapore is the closest other option (ie import)).
Keep in mind that Freight costs have gone up about 100% in the last 4 years since september 11, and most developed countries will now no longer allow single skin tankers - thus there has been a whole lot of new tankers built in the last 5 years to meet this. New tankers cost money, which is recouped through freight rates, and eventually through you and I, the end consumer.
The government then adds its 40 - 55c / L taxes and excise on top of whatever price is set.
In the end, all the oil companies are not there to provide a service to the public - they are there to make a $ for their shareholders. But dont think that they are gouging you. If anything, blame the terrorists and the skittish crude traders that have pushed global oil prices from $25 / BBL to $57 / BBL in two years flat. Then save some blame for OPEC for wishing to keep prices there. And finally just a little blame for the Chinese, who now that they have discovered capitalism have decided to grow their oil and gas demand about 20 - 30% PER YEAR over the last couple, as well as buying all the worlds steel too...........
Its not a simple argument, nor is it a simple argument (for the average Joe Public) to properly inform yourself about, but in the end, we are not in that bad a position. Travel to Japan or to the UK and pay $2.20 - $2.60 a liter if you dont like it here.......
boozer, my best friend was a station attendant for about 6 years, and even when prices were relatively cheap compared to now, you would still get d*ckheads coming in and abusing him about having to pay 74c/l... i was there once, and he handled it brilliantly. perfectly polite and well mannered, but at the same time made the person feel about as big as an ant.
the prices are in huge signs for you to see, if you dont like the price, then drive around till you find somewhere you like.
i also find it strange when people complain about how much they are paying for petrol, but would rather die than use those 4c/l off shopping dockets to buy fuel.

isnt it sad that china, the biggest bike-riding country in the world, has now discovered what petrol can do for them, and is now in global terms, moving backwards and away from environmentally friendly transport...
we go forward. they were forward but are now going backward...
as for ethanol, i think its a good idea. much cleaner and cheap to produce...
not only that, but all the sugar cane that is planted on the sunshine coast can stay there if we start to produce ethanol, and the jobs can stay there too.

No worries Y2K, like I said there is so much misinformation out there its awfully difficult for Joe Public to get informed properly...
Quick fix.
I know theres a few other secret Pushie Bike fans on here...
Ride your bike to work/school/shops save your pennies from your petrol to restore your favourite Bus/Bug/Buggy etc. Drive it on weekends. Laugh at all the other suckers sitting in traffic burning away the dollars M-F as your cruise by on your pedal power.
And before anyone starts about convienience/Danger/bloody cyclists, refer to treatment of Servo employees on the Bloody Cyclists front and the convienience/danger is all a state of mind.
Get everyone onto a bike and the money youll save on petrol will buy your next Vee Dub. you might even get fit and loose the gut ALL FOR FREE (DISCLAIMER: I still have a gut....)
Thats my 2c , nearly less thean the margin an a litre of fuel....
Get off your repsective couches etc and do something about it. im just about as sick as the Servo workers of hearing about the PRICE OF FUEL. Build that bridge and ride the bike all the way over it !
Cheers Volks

thanks Doug, I knew I was right and considering me and both my parents are in the fuel industry for about ten+ year I should!

I've been a servo attendant for just over three and I have NEVER been rude to anyone. but it really pisses me off. I was lucky when I started as I was in a servo in Vict Pt that did driveway service still and for nearly 2 yrs it was awesome. Now the company has decided that it is not worth haveing 2 staff on to do this so have pretty much canned it. and as the servo is not on a main road and is not new (very old) or big it's shop and fuel sales have decreased greatly. I asked to be move out of there as it was too depressing telling regular customers that I wasnt able to help them anymore and having them whinge to me constantly. BRING BACK DRIVEWAY SERVICE!

Yeah, I suppose we just gotta live with the fact that oil is going to get rarer, and rarer, and POOF! GONE!
So, i think as a society, we should start getting prepared, dust the cobwebs of the old bike, OR PERHAPS INVEST IN AN OLDFASHIONED HORSE AND CART.
But if everyone gets a horse, then imagine all the SH1T on the highway. (extra jobs for the unemployed though, looking on the bright side they could be the future POOPA SCOOPAS)

Latest price break down from the government. Released today.
% - Component
45 - Import price
38.6 - Commonwealth Government Excise
9.1 - GST
1.2 - Freight
0.6 - Wholesaler costs & profit
5.5 - Retailer/distribution costs & profit
Instant 10% discount if little johnny howard droped GST on fuel.........
Anyway the goverment is loving it, they collect more gst as the price goes up. Just think since Dec where they were collecting between 8 and 9c per ltr to today where they are collecting 10 to 12c per ltr, that is like a 45% increase if my maths are correct.
The goverment should be using this winfall for something usefull like fixing medicare, roads or the dam tax system but instead they are giving it away or putting into consolderated revenue.
Don't worry about the GST (even though it compunds another tax)
The excise is the killer. By the end of the year it will be 40%. Nice little earn for doing nothing.
Not listed in that break down is the NSW 3x3 tax* (even though it has been going for more than 3 time 3 years now). Oh yeah and the GST is compounded on that tax too!
*the 3x3 tax was supposed to be 3c per litre for 3 years mostly to complete the Pacific Highway. Been a decade now and now they want to toll the Pacific Highway.
what about the 3x3 levee it was only suppose to go for 3 years and its now how many years later
