Has anyone had the same problem with thier early ovals - the shifter cup rubs on the handbrake pushrod when you select reverse? By the look of the worn pushrod, it has been doing that for a long while. Should I just leave it?

Does your shift rod have a slight bend? They usually do.

The early gearsticks have a dogleg in them because the base is more forward than the late ones.. what is a shifter cup?? And u mean handbrake button not pushrod right?

The shiftrods are bent from the factory but I think you are talking about outside the tunnel right??

Nah, my gearstick is REAL early - simply straight.

The shifter cup I'm refering to is the 'cup' that the ball (bottom of the shifter) sits into - like a ball and socket joint. My version hasn't got the slot to prevent the shifter from rotating - that came on later ovals I think.

nah - i'm refering to the pushrod itself...

I'm talking about inside the tunnel... it rubs on the gear stick cup/socket joint when selection reverse - so much so, the handbrake moves a bit.

hmm, so it arches up a bit doesn't it? Do all years have that nylon bush at the front shift rod bracket? I dont think I have one!

I dont think the early bugs had the nylon bush fitted. the bracket was flanged or pressed so as to make a bearing support and lots of grease applied.
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true
