I am wanting to put and older style bonnet onto my 69 beetle. Do they fit ??? Obvisually i would have to change the bottom panel and how it latches, not sure about under the windscreen though. Has any one done this mod.
.
If i am going to go ahead and change the bonnet over i would also like to remove the bonnet handle. What is involved to do this ???nn[ Edited on 1/7/2005 by silverbullet ]

Yes I did it on my '69 beetle, fits fine, and gets rid of the air box too.

what year did you get your bonnet off. Were you happy with the result?

I used a '64 - '67 bonnet with the raised emblem, fits well up around the windscreen, no worries.

I use an NOS 60's german front beaver and had to make early front bumper mounts inside the spare wheel well, and of cause an early bonnet catch.

Thanks..

AFAIK there in Oz there is the 54 bonnet which has a triangle thing under the emblem bit??, then there is the 55 - 62 bonnets (i think there is a 4 tab and 3 tab versions) all with no plinth then there is 63-67 which have the raised VW plinth thing and no wolfsburg crest above the handle.

Hi, Yeah your correct about the 54 bonnets, They have a triangle shaped piece under the badge on the underneath and if anyone has one please let me know. These are quite hard to find and to find a good one is really hard. I have many later model bonnets that I will sell to you (55-62 four tab) if you are interested.

Unsure on how you get the bonnet to fasten with the handle removed. How is this generally done? i would think with a solinoid. Any ideas would be great.

Hi

I saw an article in HVWs I think about removing the handle, they just welded the dogs dick bracket straight onto the bottom of the bonnet and then removed the handle, a bit permanent I thought.
