Last weekend, HRM organised the Sydney - Newcastle Supercruise to raised fund for Pistol Pete. There was plenty of notice given, yet when we met at Thornleigh, there was a paltry 5 cars from the whole of Sydney [and I'd travelled down from the Central Coast - to then cruise back up].

When we got to Warnervale we picked up 5 more, and then by the time we got to Newcastle, we had over 30 cars.

Does Sydney have a problem with cruises? I heard one comment from someone that a particular club wouldn't come if there was no cruise award! What? This was a fund raising benefit, not a trophy collection event.:puke

I think our Newcastle pals are leaving Sydney for dead when it comes to organising cruises, and get togethers without politics - good onya Sam.:thumb

On the Central Coast, our numbers are smaller, but we've still managed to fit in 4 get togethers this year.

So.....what's the problem with Sydney? A population of 4 million, with thousands of dubbers, yet only 4 make it to Thornleigh. There was plenty of notice for this cruise, and whilst it was an all day event - a few more would have been expected.

For me.....having a dub is about having some fun cruising with friends, and new friends. Getting some dubs together in row, and making a scene on the road.

I accept we have our racers, show cars, collecters etc etc....but sheesh....cruising your dub is the best thing - getting to your destination is half the fun. :kiss

I think the trophy comment/problem is common. So many trophy hunters out there.

Seems lone wolf cruises aren't so popular only when they are club runs...?
That said other cruises Rach and I have organised have had good numbers...

The efforts made by Wollongong and Newcastle and even coutry people far exceedes Sydney people all the time.

I was so surprised and happy to see all the cars waiting at Newcastle!

I must say that I was very disheartened when it came time to leave Thornleigh and we had a meager 5 cars (thanks to those who cruised the whole distance with us). This was the first time I drove my car in a VW cruise and I had a ball. When we left Warnervale with 10 cars I got more excited to be a part of the group, but when we turned the corner into Speers Point and saw all the Newcastle dubs already lined up on the grass I was AMAZED! Thankyou Newcastle!! Thanks for showing your support. Pete's Mum, Dad and Brother where amazed at the generosity you all showed.
Sydney didn't get behind this cruise.... Why? I understand people have other things to do on Sundays but I'm sure that if there where trophies and prizes on offer there would have been a bigger turn out. Well there was one prize on offer and that was the Green's Family Choice and the prize was a pinstriped glove box lid. Looked wicked too!! There where some tops prizes in the raffle as well! But, you didn't just miss out on the goodies, you missed out on a fabulous day out in the sunshine and fresh air, sharing the day with your family and friends.
Isn't that what it's realy supposed to be about?

sorry i have to agree here with the other who actually TURNED UP !!!!!!!!

there was bucketsa loads of notice, plenty of meeting points ect. and yet still only so few turned up.

im not going to pussy foot around here we all know that for several reasons that from my knowledge no sydney club members showed up........GROW UP !!!!!!!!

it was a fundraiser, and for what ever childish reasons the clubs choose to boycot the event, ruined what little chance they had to show some true aussie spirit, get together and show our support for a fallen comrade *sp*

to coin a phrase, im getting off my soapbox now. so those of you offended please tell me so here, but keep in moind if your offended by what i said you were obviously not there on sunday....

p.s. i understand those of you who honestly could not get there for family or other personal issues, dont worry theres always next time 😉

i totally agree with squizy, its a shame that sydney has such a large group of vw owners who only cruise becasue of trophies that are on offer at the end of the day, this was a fundraiser and it was orginized by sydneysiders,so you would think that the support of fellow sydney vw owners would be big,but obviously not..you guys dont pay club fees or club rego for no reason right?so why not cruise for the fun of cruising and having a good time with other vw owners who u have never met b4,makes it even better.DNVK and F3DK and SOME sydney guys/girls made the effort so why not the
"club vw" and "flat four" clubs start having a go and forget about your trophy cabinet for a while, everything isint always about winning, its bout having fun

And honestly, the hot buick & ford were worth the trip alone....meeting the veedubbers I have spoken to via my puter was such a bonus...even if i didnt get to spend as much time as I'd like to talking to u all...

best fun though was trip home...hehe....

Thats pretty sad, I know when we were in VW clubs it was always the same, organise a cruise and the same few cars would show up...thats a fact of club life...
But being a fundraiser for a fellow VW driver who's been in a car accident should have attracted heaps more cruisers.
Incidentally, up in Brisbane we had a Kombi cruise at Bribie Island on the same day that had less advertising I believe and wasnt for such a worthwhile cause managed to attract 35 VW's.

Part of the prob is that being on the net we can all be really anonymous. If we were in clubs together we could kick eachothers butts for not going to stuff and help fix eachothers cars so we could get there. but no one is in clubs much now. all too hard to find the time and lets not even go into the politcal side of stuff. the information superhighway doesn't equal real friends. my wife keeps telling me i'm talking to stranger whenever i get on the forum, guess she is right.

We (my wife & I & 20month old twins) cuised down from Taree (by the time we got to speers point we had been on the road for about 3.5 hrs) and just missed getting to the caltex at warnervale on time but caught up to the bunch just after they left the freeway and must say I was a little dissapointed in the number of cars in the actual cruise. Now I'm the first to admit that I havent been to a VW event for quite some time, but considering this was for a worthy cause i decided to make the trek down and I thought there would be a shit load more cars in the cruise part of the day as this was the part i was really looking forward to, there is nothing better than a long line of volksies out cruising together. Makes people think twice about turning up next time. I am currently helping to organise an attempt on the "World Record for The Largest Gathering Of VW Kombi's" in my home town of Old Bar and at this stage I cant see us coming even close.
Cheers

Thanks to everyone who has responded. It wasn't a go at individuals at all, but more at the whole scene. I can understand those that have plans, engine problems, etc....that cannot be helped, but more it is about what's going on in the scene.

I agree with what Pete has said....we are anonymous....but in the past 3 years since being on AVD, I would have met personally 30+ of you....and 15+ of those I would call friends and shout a beer any day. AVD in itself is actually breaking down those walls, allowing us to meet each other personally, put names to faces, and forge longtime friendships. When it comes to cruising, it's about taking that first step, and getting out there. :beernn[ Edited on 3-8-2005 by squizy ]

I just want to set the record straight and say that Flat Four did not "boycott" the event, nor do I think we should have to "start having a go and forget about your trophy cabinet for a while".

I know the comments posted above by other forum members are not a personal attack but it still pisses me off that we might be tarred with the same brush so to speak of, being slackness, political and not caring.

Our club has many cruises that are not oriented around trophies, if you don't believe me, check the Club website and see what's been on and some of the Club reports. The Herbie night wasn't about trophies, the open invitation to all Sydneysiders actually posted here on this forum (to which there were no responses mind you) was not trophy oriented, the cruise to the Camden car show to support the local Lions Club was not about trophies (although we happened to pickup two, one of which went to Shane who was at the Pistol Pete cruise), the Cataract Dam cruise was not about trophies, etc etc etc.

When Dannyboy organised a Youz Cruiz night last year the Club came along. We also had a great Central Coast combined cruise with DNVK last year which was not about trophies. This year when the Club cruised to Bulli to support the Shoalhaven club for an event, a couple of us still met the DNVK guys to go to the Euro Day.

VWFOOL and myself I like to think have pretty good open communication about most things, there is no closed club doors.

So please don't paint the wrong picture about the Cliub. There are plenty of VWs in the Club which aren't even classed as trophy winners anyway and yes there are some. If you have heard reports about certain people in the Club, whether it be true or false I don't know but don't class everyone the same.

This isn't about politics. Some of the issues here are about awareness too and committments. We have alot of family members in the Club now which means that whilst cruises are great, there are also alot of non-VW committments to squeeze in each month. Out of the four weekends in July, something was tentatively scheduled for three weekends out of the four in July at the time the monthly meeting which was held on the first Sunday of the month (two weeks before the Pistol Pete cruise was organised). Again if you don't believe me check the website. So as people plan to do whatever else they need to do around Club events, the weekends quickly become full.

Between monthly meetings with the exception of the Club events, most members (besides those who are very close friends) do not even see each other during the month. Many do not even know about this forum or get on the internet much at all.

I would say that personally I let Matt down somewhat by not making a post about the cruise on the Club calendar but I have my own medical reasons for the past two weeks for not even doing that. I am writing this reply fired up by what I have heard, even though my sight is still poor.

Matt and Rachael did a great job of organising the benefit for Pete and I wish we could have had a show of cars but that did not happen and can't be changed. I would certainly have made all Clubmembers aware of the cruise if I had known about it prior to the Committee meeting on the 1st July and monthly club meeting on 3rd July but details weren't in place at that time. I would never have mentioned this before but while I'm being told to "grow up" (pyr0 you said this but it IS NOT a return attack on you personally), I couldn't make the cruise for reaons already explained to Matt and STILL managed to make a donation so don't for one minute think we don't care or show support.

And before I get off the soapbox, of the 120 odd VWs who showed up to our Herbie night, a mighty good number of which aren't Club cars, where were they all for Pistol Pete?? They are probably not wanting to join a Club because of the negative generalisations that get thrown around about being in a club.

I would definitely say you did not let us down Scott!

Not only did you make the effort to let me know about your desire but inability to come but you also made a commitment and sacrifice to pony up for Pete, a guy who is just a fellow VeeDubber to you without any personal connection. That could never disappoint anyone.

I don't feel personally about the poor Sydney turn-up. The day was about Pete and having fun in VeeDubs. Sitting around talking looking at cars without judges getting in the way...
And it certainly wasn't a HRM/CG effort. The day simply wouldn't have happened without Squizy, VWFOOL, Manx_XTC and BugEyedBabe and others like Shane who put in considerable effort and time.

As to clubs knowing... several people from each club in Sydney were contacted. Granted notice was not as much as most people would like (including me) but the timetable was dictated by the availablity of Pete's family to be involved and also not impinge on other events...

No matter how large the notice given, what is it that can be done differently next time? Whilst we can post something up here, maybe the smaller "non-clubs" such as DNVK and F3DK need to draw up a calendar and make it available to larger clubs to add to their yearly schedule? On the flipside, this is exactly what Sam and I don't want....rules, hardened controls about when we're going to do something.

ur right squiz, ill never do that with the club, coz thats not wat we're about, and thats not the way it works. our way works. each cruise has a great turn out, with good people and sweet rides.

to be honest wat happens in sydney doesnt bother me much coz we're not sydney, we r a newcastle club. nor do i expect ppl to travel to newcastle for a cruise. our club is growing steadliy with each cruise and everyone seems pretty happy with how its going.
i hav appreciated the support of flat 4 and the vw historical society who have joined us on a few occasions and these were defintly not trophy runs. the euro day in feb was a great example of a few different clubs coming together under the one umbrella and representing as one. i hear so much bullshit about each club and a whole lot of old shit from the past about this guy and that guy, which i really dont care about, my experience with these guys has been good and i look forward to hav them join us at events in the future. i did make an attempt to join in with a small bit of fun for the nats this year but dissapointingly i never recieved any type of response from the organisors. but its cool, thats just the way things go i guess.

there are no vw shows in newcastle as of yet but we hav the 3rd annual Euro Classic Car Day happening in february next year and we got over 50 there this year and im planning for double that in '06.

my advice to anyone pining for a cruise is find some like minded people in ur area (easy with the net), and just start doing it. it shuld catch on b4 long.
if that doesnt work, newcastle is only an hour and a half up the freeway. 🙂
