When a 1/4 inch spanner is too small, but a 5/32 inch in too big, what system are VW's on?
Always Learning!!
METRIC
Not sure how many mm that works out to be though.

VW car, VW engine ...... keepin it "real"
35MPG on 101.3kPa
1/4" = 6.35mm, so probably a 7mm spanner.
5/32"= 3.97mm
Ain't nothin' like the wind in your hair.
Would be a lot easier just to go and buy a metric spanner set.

If you can't laugh at yourself you can't laugh at anyone else! Because life is to short not to LAUGH
metric is a" must have" for vw oh n dont like me spend a fortune on snap on etc they may be guarneteed for life, but tools are known to "walk" from a very young age
saying that somethin middle of the line like sidcrome( good aussie gear) is reasonably priced n good gear. having the right tool for the job will make vw'ing a more pleasreable passtime
SuoerCheap Autos... $20 will get you a set of Metrics :thumb

I was lucky, when I was young My father had Beetles and so My first tools I bought were all metric....
plus the next set etc... VBW Dowidat [both german]
Sidcrome plus others I have collected over the years..
I had to but certain spanners - say 8 or 10mm in different lengths and offset so it would do a certain job....
Metrich are good tools but expensive...
AS usual German are best..... but there are plenty of others about.... Indian are usually crappy and do break....
German spanners don't break.... I suppose if they are hit with a large hammer they might break, but in normal circumstances.... they wont break....
I only own one large inch spanner size 9/16" which I use on the sump plug.... It may have come from one of My Sons who is also a ford person & VWs..

Its much cheaper to buy a set of spanners than to buy individually....
You will need: 8mm 10mm 12mm 13mm 14mm ***
then 15mm 16mm 17mm 18mm 19mm
that will get You going....
It may be easier for You to buy a spanner each week...
I bought a spare set of double ended ring/open end spanners at a swap meet....
Best of Luck...

Anyone heard of the whitworth measurement system?
Always Learning!!
Whitworth is not something you need to worry about on VW. Old British cars will be one of your main sources of bolts requiring Whitworth spanners.
I scored a Kinchrome 3/8 drive metric low (4mm?) to 22mm, with some deep sockets and it came with a set of ring spanners up to 19mm from the tradequip website. $126 + P&P.
Only rotten bit is you'll have to buy a sparkplug socket separately.
As 68AutoBug has mentioned the further you go, the specialist stuff comes in handy.
You'll need a 32mm and 36mm socket as well (maybe a 46mm depending on your car). The 36mm will set you back 14.00 from the VW part specialists and is 1/2" drive. Most other 36mm are 3/4" drive.
You can go beserk if your wallet can stand it....
Be thankfull you don't own an early 70's Brit Bike. My Commando has UNF, UNC, Whitworth and Cycle:cry
Enjoy
