Hey there guys, was thinking about putting a 2litre type 4 into my notch but was wondering if it was possible to keep the rear boor usable and what would be required to do this? Does anyone know ?
thanks michael
i believe these were reasonably popular back in the day, with kits available to do it, with the right carb/airfilter etc i believe it is possible either to fit it all unter the stock lid or have a small bulge into the mini-boot on top.

Hi
Chris Farser aka as Amazer had one in his fastback.
Steve
I am currently in the process of doing this now to my notchback, then will be selling it. It fits in nicely, with no modifications to the lid, i am going to use twin 40 IDF's with shortened manifolds and an air bellows adapter that you can get from south africa, that costs 100 Rand but converts to about 30 aussie dollars. I will be using the rear mount from the kombi which just requires shortening also and can fit in the existing rear hanger brackets in the type 3. For more info go to
http://tunacan.net/t4/tech/index.shtml and look for t3 conversion, cheers Damo.
This is my Volkswagen, there are many like it, but this one is mine. Without me my Volkswagen is useless, without my Volkswagen, I am useless.

Have u got any pics of ur conversion completed? would really be interested to see how it looks. is it possible to still run the heater? not to sure on how the heater works on the type 4 but for some reason i thought there was an eletric blower?
thanks
Heater on a type 4 works very similar to a type 3. The electric fan was a booser only, so it still works fine from the cooling fan, just plug the holes the electric fan would have attached to. You may need to modify the oulet location for cleanence issues though.

Stock 2L max ~70hp, stock 1600 type 3 max ~63hp!
The main difference is the torque curve, it kicks in lower and is flatter in a type 4 motor. 1600's revs higher also.
(things get a bit different if you start modifying though).

Hi
You can get pretty good hp from a type 4 (look at Dieters donut video), but as with a type 1 that power costs money. You might want to price it all up and then look at the costs of Subaru conversion.
Steve
the yanks do this a lot, have a look at the shoptalk forum links posted here:

car forums. where a lot of peoples good intentions end up taking a good old car off the road forever never ever to see the road again. 🥲
I didnt think the kombi bar fit without modification? Thought it had to be moved forward a little?
Also, dont rely just on the bits of sheetmetal hanging inside the engine bay to hold the engine up. Run some threaded rod up to the boot floor and use some 1/4 plate to strengthen it a little. I found fitting my engine was a pain in the bum because there wasnt enough room lengthways but that was probably more to do with the kombi box setup. A few minor wiring issues with the alternator/generator thing. The egnine itself will fit under the boot floor easily, but carbs and airfilter is a different issue. I never ran the stock setup so dont know for sure but I cant envisage it fitting.
My memory of it is vague, but its all pretty easy and doable. Wayne Penrose has/is in process of doing a customer car too.
Hey does anyone have any pics of this mod? would it really be worth it for sucg little power increase or would i really notice the difference?
I'd like to this conversion on my notch when the 1600 dies.
I've looked into it a fair bit, and to fit the stock carbs and everything under a type 3 engine lid, you need the type 411/412 wagon intake manifolds, which are much shorter.
Hard to find, but i have a friend who has a pair sitting around that i'll buy when i do the conversion!
