Hi people's

I heard a rumour that the QLD Gov is going to start closing beaches and 4wd areas to any cars that are not 4Wd and police areas that are already closed the 2wd cars.

Does anyone know if this is just bulls@%t or is it true. If it is true we need to get something going to makes sure that Buggys and Baja's are allowed to go into these areas.

you already can't get a Bribie permit for 2WD vehicles.
Vehicles travelling through the recreation area, including the Ocean Beach, must be fully road-registered four-wheel-drives

yeah they are trying to get rid of 2wds on the sand.

I have heard they are knocking people back who apply for Bribie, and even refunding and cancelling people who have bribie permits.

then what would happen to the good old torsion bar suspension 🙁

couldn't necessarily weld 2 rear ends together (IE: replace front beam with an rear IRS/ swinger setup)
unless u knew how to reverse the movements of the wheels when going over a bump. the rear of a bug (wheel) goes up & towards the back of the car... if u were to weld IRS or swinger setup on front, wheels would go up and forward (into the bump), and I would imagine that would put more force on the wheels then a strut front end setup...

But i'm not engineer.
Think theres a way to reverse the direction of the torsion in the torsion bars wes? WAIT! I have an idea (hmm, we don't have a smilie for thinking/contimplating)

This would be a very interesting project. and if ur using a scoobydoo engine setup, with the way the chassis would be modded, would make it a good start for an ICV :P

although somewhat off-topic, VW produced several VW beetle suspension based 4WD vehicles. They were 4WD in first gear only. Some Kubelwagens, the Schwimwagen and my favourite the type 82e Kommandeurwagen. (not sure on the spelling of all those).

Noosa North Shore:
Dune buggies and trail bikes by their design create noise, safety and environmental damage risks, and are incompatible with the region’s values. Nevertheless dune buggies and trail bikes can be registered and observe road rules and thus are legitimate users of the area.
North Sraddie:
13. A beach access permit may only be granted where the vehicle referred to in the application:-
(a) is registered with the relevant authority and covered by a third party insurance policy; and
(b) is in a roadworthy condition and in a state of good mechanical repair; and
(c) is one of the following types:-
(i) 4WD; or
(ii) a purpose designed two-wheel drive vehicle (for example, tractor or beach buggy); or
(iii) a vehicle referred to in (i) or (ii) which is towing a single axle trailer or caravan.

Hi

Good qoutes Mikem where did you get those quotes from, I have been to the EPA site , I must not be looking in the right areas.

it would be good if we all could get a copy of the regulations so when we apply and the little Hitlers say no 2Wd'S we can throw the book at him.

They should just say 'Off-road vehicles' and leave the 2wd/4wd bit out

I guess the 4WD word is there to stop the dumb tourists thinking they can go on there in rented Camrys etc

Ok as most of this thread probably relates to comments I have the following info to add.

FACTS
- 2 WD Vehicles are no longer allowed to gain a Bribie Island Permit, if they had one then it should have been cancelled and a refund issued or if the slipt through the gaps then they will not be allowed to renew. The Caboulture Shire Council who use to control permits to Bribie no longer have any involvement and it is now governed by QLD Parks and Wildlife Services (QPWS)
- QPWS have changed the permit to reflect the new access rules to 4WD vehicles only. No exceptions.
- QPWS over the next few years will take over access to control to most of the Beach Driving in Sth East Qld, this includes DI and Fraser to name a few. Yes I know Fraser already has National Parks and Wildlife Access controls but this will follow down the Bribie Track.

CURRENT ACTIONS

The Manx Dune Buggy Club Australia inc are currently fighting this closure with everything they have to throw into the ring. This thing has the potential to destroy a lot of peoples fun and enjoyment. That and the fact that I hate bureaucracy doing stuff from an uninformed point of view. So there is no confusion here, yes I also know that I own a business which would suffer if Buggies were stoped from using the beach.

So what can people do to help….
- Join the Manx Dune Buggy Club – I can hear all you internet offroaders and tyre kickers bleating from here about this being a ploy to get more members, if that is you then you are a wanker and the Manx Club would be better off without you. For the rest of you there is safety in number and united we stand as individuals we fail. When I talk to QPWS and tell them how the Manx Dune Buggy Club which was originally established in the early 90’s to serve the buggy community which now has over 120 members and provides an avenue for like minded responsible enthusiasts to enjoy the great outdoors and the benefits that responsible park management has given it sounds a heck of a lot better than saying Me and a Mate thinks these new rules suck…. You get my point..

I have heard a lot of people whinge about the Manx Club not doing anything and never putting on runs blah blah blah .. well we have been fighting this change since day dot and let me tell you up front it has taken a lot more effort than organising a quick blat up the beach.

I would also like to state that I am not the Manx Club so if people have an issue with me then feel free to give me a call (07) 3356 4356 during work hours and I will discuss it. The Manx Club is run by a committee of which I am a member. I have taken this fight on because I know people in the right places and am prepared to put the $$$ and time into making sure we get a fair hearing, and hopefully a win.

I would also ask at this time that people let us continue along the path of unity for at least the next month or so. I have submitted a proposal to the District Manager out lining what I feel will be an acceptable outcome for both Offroad VW owners and the QPWS.

If the proposal is not acceptable then I think more drastic actions are required and would be keen to organise firstly a public meeting to which I would invite the QPWS Director and his mates and 2ndly a petition and Cruise to their Offices to present it to them.

The Manx Club has a good reputation with QPWS and to date have had not instances of behaviour or environmental damage to answer even after many years of park usage. I am very keen on keeping this relationship healthy as I feel it will benefit all Buggy owners down the track.

Anyway that is enough from me I have some more phone calls to make.

Park Specific Conditions - Bribie
Park Specific Conditions
Vehicles

ALL vehicles, vans and trailers must be road registered
ONLY four wheel drive vehicles are permitted in the recreation area.

From https://www.epa.qld.gov.au/parks/iaparks/gds/IAGDS056.do

This is a form so may not work, goto epa.qld.gov.au and search for Bribie and then fill in a vehicle permit, once you submit you will be shown the terms and conditions which state the above in big ass red letters.

The Manx Club has copies of rules and regulations for most of the vehicle accessable beaches around SEQ and will continue to track regulations in the area. They are available for use by club members for club events.

Unfortunately beach buggy's have a conotation of being associated with hoons and environmental destructionists. This is a direct extract from the Noosa Northshore Beach Managment Plan.
Dune buggies and trail bikes by their design create noise, safety and environmental damage risks, and are incompatible with the region’s values
Unfortunately it is the actions of the few that reflect on the many.

One of the options we may have is to allow access to vehicles in suitable car clubs only, allowing clubs to decide if a vehicle is suitable. This would suit both 4wds and Buggies and would signifigantly reduce traffic to the areas and make someone (ie. the clubs) responsible for peoples behaviour.

Next time you drive your buggy or baja down a beach or in a national park, drive by the rules, do the right thing, and leave a good impression. Or none of us will be allowed back.

Thanks Brad and Mike
This is the info I was looking for. What was happening and what to do about it.
I agree with Brad that we need to show a united front on this and put any arguements we have with each other away until we fix this problem as the 4wd Association have and let them know that Buggys and Baja's can use these areas in the same ways the 4Wd clubs do. So if it means we have to spend a few dollars and join the Manx Club to show a force of numbers then count me in.

I am going to the Manx club page now to join, if there is anyting I can do to help with this Brad and Mike give me a call 0410920488.

Ok here is what it said when I applied for a permit.
the words FOUR WHEEL DRIVE were in large red letters and under lined.

Park Specific Conditions

Park Specific Conditions

Vehicles
# ALL vehicles, vans and trailers must be road registered
# ONLY four wheel drive vehicles are permitted in the recreation area.
# ALL drivers must hold a current, appropriate driver's licence
# Vehicles may only be brought into the recreation area under the authority of a vehicle service permit.
# Vehicles are prohibited north of the WWII Search light.
# Vehicles are prohibited on the beach south of the ocean beach access track.
# Vehicles should only be driven on tracks and thoroughfares officially designated for vehicle use.
# It is illegal to drive on the sand dunes.
# Speed limits apply:

Ocean Beach access track 30km/h
Ocean Beach 50km/h
Reduced speed adjacent to the Ocean Beach camping area 30km/h
Inland roads 30km/h

# Road rules apply and Queensland Police patrol this area. Slow down near camping areas and obey speed limits.
# Wear seatbelts at all times.
# Never carry passengers outside the vehicle cabin.
# Keep to the left of oncoming vehicles at all times.
# Use indicators when overtaking or turning.

So lets see what is going to happen to Frasier , Double Island Point.

I'd like to know how they came about their observations of dune buggies being environmentally damaging and having safety issues. Whenever I've read the local paper up here about vehicle accidents and environmental damage caused by vehicles it's always been 4wds. I know there's a lot higher percentage of 4wds up the beach compared to VWs of any kind but in 15 years of living here I've never read of a baja/buggy or a bus involved in any bad occurances. It's the drivers not the vehicles that are the problem, just sit and watch for a while on the beach you'll soon see.
I'd really like to know how or why they think a buggy would be more damaging than a big 4wd, maybe oil drips? But then 4wds never drip oil do they!

good luck turning it around. the "responsible club" approach has worked for 4wds and horseriders in other areas and would seem to be the best here to. authorities love a single entity they can deal with rather than a rabble of indivifduals.

anothe qu.
why is there a $30 a week vehicle access fee in the first place. camping fees i can understand, but $30 to go up a few k's of beach and do some fishing or whatever, i dont understand...
