Just lately I have noticed heaps of P platers in fast cars. Mostly WRX's and EVO's but a few standard v8 commodores, then today I saw a genuine looking GTHO with a green p plate in the back window. Did that law never make it into existance or are these guys just running the gauntlet.

the laws are there, in vic it is a power/weight ratio, in NSW there is a blacklist of cars that p-platers cant drive, but from what i understand theres alot of cars missing from the list and it is pretty easy to circumnavigave as you can get exemptions if you bought the car before the rules came about, if it is the only car in the household, etc.

There are various restrictions placed on P plate drivers for performance cars. The thing is some P plate drivers are not effected by the laws due to them (the new laws) coming in after some drivers obtained their P plates. So to answer your questions, there are some P plate drivers (green p) who can legally drive turbo cars and the like. It also possible for some drivers to make application in writing to get approval to drive a hi performance car. But the approval is only on a limited basis. I hope that helps.

well, the rich are exempted from all laws anyways, they're not people.

From what I gather from working at a jap import sports cars showroom/workshop, P platers in vic from july sometime cannot:

Drive cars over the already in place 125kw/ton law, along with no 8s or turbos, cars with 3000cc or bigger displacement. P platers that got their licence after 2005 i think have to abide by these laws.

Curfew of like 10 or 11 pm has been approved and set to be put in place some time in the future

also passenger restrictions

I heard all of this through the typical import scene grapevines, but yeh its gotta suck for us P platers. It's good business for us because we heard wind of the new laws and stocked up on n/a skylines and they've been selling like hotcakes, but it both sucks and blows.
Personally the cops won't be able to enforce the laws sufficently. If they can't even enforce the 125/per ton law, how are they guna do it with a couple extra boxes to tick?

Anyways, I think us VW owners are more of a threat on the road than a 3 litre sedan or even an import for that matter, with eskies dropping and axles scrapping and whatnot.

My opinion is with all the money theyre going to use to establish and enforce these laws they could have done more effective methods like educating the kids better all and that jazz. while i was in high school (last year), we had basically no education on driving in the classroom but "Tokyo Drift" on a mates laptop.

It was a knee jerk reaction to a problem that was 98% media beat up. It wasn't that P platers were dropping like flies, it was just all you heard about, even the ones that the P plater wasn't at fault.
They did the same thing with trucks years ago.

This idea that it has something to do with high performance cars is bullshit, because there really isn't any low performance cars anymore.

With very few exceptions, everything built over the last 5 or 10 years goes like a shower of shit.
Bikes are the same. When I was a boy, you learned on a sedate 250. Same law still applies but the modern 250 is nothing short of a projectile.

True story: A bloke I used to work with, the kind of fool that should never have been allowed near a car, lost his HT at Speers Point. Landed upside down in Lake Maquarie, killed him & the three blokes with him. That was 1980.

The moral of the story is, nothing changes.

A dickhead being a dickhead will get his clock cleaned eventually, it's inevitable.
Laws wont prevent it, & the type of car wont matter.

Best you can do is hope your nowhere near it at the time.
Well my friends are gone & my hair is grey, I ache in the places where I used to play.

p-plates also dont make much of a difference. How many of the fatalities involve stolen cars?

my senior english class looked at the statistics etc last year for an assignment. and statistically drivers of the age bracket 60-70 cause more accidents than P platers. And P platers involved in accidents are more likely to Not at fault.

but in all reality, the only P plater rule coming into QLD that will effect me as a new P plater after 1st july will be having to show a P plate. my wee beetle wont be seeing a turbo or supercharger any time soon, and my back seats are making way for a sound system. so the passenger capacity law wont effect me either.
