I too have had a loooowww swing axle beetle and yes they do last for a while but as for long term NO they bloody don't.
So Humpty you must have some mirarcle oil that runs uphill A !!!

And, just out of interest, who fitted your whitewalls(?), mine need re-doing on the front of the 59, or I might get a new set for the 59 and put the older, dirtier ones on the 55!
