One of the heads on my beetle has had a rather intresting repair done on the exhaust when it joins to the head. what i need to know is what would be the best way to fix? its the one on the front and the bottom stud thats missing(it had a selftaping bolt ramed in). Can i get someone to weld it up and retap a stud into it? or helicoil? another solution? i am not to worried if its perfect as its a baja and covered in mud most of the time...

Asmlong as the self tapping bolt has not enlarged the hole more than is required for a helicoil then a helicoil will be the easiest solution in my opinion.

Someone else may be able to let you know what size hole an M8 helicoil requires to be effective.

Can you tap the hole out to a standard M10 x 1.5 ? The hole should be 8.5 diameter for this. Have a stepped stud made to suit, that is, M8 one end and M10 the other. Can help if you need a stud. Let me know.

DubCrazy,

You'd be mad if you don't take up 1500S's offer to make you a replacement stud. I wish I'd known him a couple of years ago, I had the same problem & an engineering shop charged me $40 to make me a stepped stud. I needed to get back on the road & didn't have much choice other than to cough up.

Regards,

Matt.
