There will be some load as i understand it, but should not be enough to give that much of a drop.....How many revs are we talking?

Well not sure exactly, but assuming its only when the clutch is out, has to be either clutch or GB

If it was the egine should be the same no matter what the clutch is doing.
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

There will be some load on the engine with the clutch engaged (foot off pedal) as the gearbox bits are still turning. How many RPM are we talking about??? What type of oil is in the box? "Thick"/cold oil will cause more of a "drain" on power but it should be minimal. I recall this being asked before....

ok the revs drop about 250rpm (too much for my liking) otherwise the car is fine ie plenty of power no clutch slip no gearbox whine no excessive throw out bearing noise nothing

I have seen it once that as you put your foot on the clutch, it pushed the crank (with excessive end float) back which retarded the timing enough to change idle rpm.

I'm with Matt, this was happening to my wifes beetle and a strip down revealed a flogged crank. To much end float but in your case and I'd say the timing is out also (corrected when clutch is in). I'd time it up properly and when you push in the clutch the revs should drop. you can also try pulling on the pully you should feel almost zero movement.

Is this happening with the 2275 roller engine i rebuilt or another engine cause i triple checked all tolerances throughout the build.
This is my Volkswagen, there are many like it, but this one is mine. Without me my Volkswagen is useless, without my Volkswagen, I am useless.

Dunno! Check crank end float. As said b4, grab crankshaft and see if end float is excessive. Should hardly move front to rear. If you see or hear much it is probably too much, but it takes heaps to change ignition timing enough to make idle speed change.

I have heard this same complaint before. I believe the problem was gearbox mainshaft bearings?? or if recently rebuilt maybe not enought clearance?
