ok a week or so ago i left my car over night in the pouring rain in a car park and returned the following night to find my battery to be dead, it was so dead it wouldnt even jump start, i bought a new battery and it started fine,

i figured water had created an earth somewhere and had drained my battery.

now a it has done it again, i had to roll start the car after work last night, and now this morning the battery is completely dead again.

last night after i roll started it i put the multi meter (DC) onto the genny and it gave a reading, but when i revved the engine the reading went down, not up.

is this normal?

What was the reading?

To find a drain in your electrical circuit, disconnect your negative battery lead, and hook a test light between the negative lead, and the negative terminal on the battery. If the test light lights up, then there is a drain. Start pulling fuses one at a time until the test light goes out. That is the circuit draining the battery. However, it sounds like your generator isnt charging properly, and you are draining it over a day or two of driving.

13.8-14.2V at the battery is what you are aiming for with the car running at about 2500rpm or so.

ok, exchanged my battery.

put the new one in, found the leak (my stereo ceased to work a long time ago when it got full of water and it appears it has been earthing out and draining power)

however im still suss on my genny.

how can i test to see if my generator warning light functions properly?

it comes on when the key is in the on position, so i know that the bulb works, but how do i know that its actually sensing when its charging or not?

what setting should i have my multi meter on when testing the charge of the generator?

should i test from the terminals on top of the genny? or at the battery?

with ya multi meter and car running at 1500 rev you should read 14-14.5 volts that will tell all about ya charging system.
as for a drain a short story my dad rearly drives his beloved ford but he was always charging the battery before a drive,, about once a month so i went and had a look, turns out the radio had a constant positive feed because it was a computer memory and anti theft by pulling the fuse it fixed the drain,. modern equipment in old cars can cause this type of drain so if its new beaware

With ignition on, engine off, red light is on as you said, then disconnect small blue wire at the voltage regulator and light should go off, if so then light is wired up ok. Reconnect blue wire. ( I'm assuming it has original wiring colours ).
To test if it is charging, connect volmeter across battery, (use 20V scale), with engine revs up a bit you should see min 13.8 volts - max 14.4volts when battery is charged, but may take a while to reach if battery is still low.

You want to be careful not to rule out the gennie. Had problem at the weekend with my other car (not vw).

I woke up on Sunday attempted to start the car. Battery flat. try roll starting, battery to flat for that. Jump start from spare battery. Good, check the alternator by measuring voltage at the battery. 14 or so volts good. Works fine for most of the day but car a little sluggish driving along (had been for weeks but thought it was another problem). Around 6 o'clock went out for tea. Turned headlights on and they dim so badly made my 6 volt volksie look good. Parked car at the place having tea. Try to turn car on after tea. Wont start. Ok roll start again. Car roll starts, hope I can get home. Lights are dim again. 1 minute up the road going up a hill car completely stops. The alternator was definetly not charging the car. Call RACT, get towed to auto electrics at 10pm. Not such a good night considering it was my wedding anniversary.

What i learnt from this escapade make sure you test the gennie with heaps of load on it before driving away. So Anthiron turn on your headlights check if you still get around 14 volts if not my guess is the gennie is stuffed.
