Hi all

Seem to have an ongoing problem. Am running a fairly warm 2180 in a trike with a remote filter & oil cooler. Problem is intermittent and sometimes when i havent ridden it for 2 week or so when i start it up there is a wizzing sound (like a supercharger winding up) then the oil filter splits at the seam and dumps the engine contents on the garage floor.

Now i aint much of a mechanic but some of you will know the solution i have no doubt. Am i running too heavy an oil? Been using 20w 50. Using valvoline filter.

Any help will really be appreciated

Regards
Sewelly

if its a fresh motor then that oils to thick
i run 10/30 in all my new engines
i switch to 10/40 or 20/50 once they get abit older and worn
u may also have a stuck oil pressure releife valve too
u got an oil press gauge?
what brand filter are u using?

Also just check your crankcase vent tube. If that's buckled or blocked then the pressure can build up inside the case then the oil looks for the easiest way out.

What case are you running? Some will have a relief and a filter bypass. Either could be stuck as suggested above.
Also try a different brand filter. Not sure what remote filter you have, but Mahle filters are used a lot on Aussie VW's.

I had that problem during winter with cold starts.
The thickness of the oil meant it over pressurised the lines and blew out at the filter, which I was using nice strong Landcruzier filters.
So I dropped down to 10w40 no problems since.

PS There is now a nice line of line from where I worked across town to home. 🙂

Done that myself on my ol kombi with Valvoline filters. No bypass valve in them and they are made badly- the stamped flutes inside dont open enough.

Use a decent filter. Golf Deisel filter has all the valves etc, get a wurth or other good one.

Hi

When I had VW or Audi motors that needed oil filters I always bought genuine brands such as Purolator, Knect, Mann Etc. Rycos and other filters are not as well made and don't filter as well.

I always buy a Genuine Toyota oil filters for my Prado, its a few extra bucks, but what's a motor worth.

sewelly62, you don't say where your oil exits the case. If its full flowed the oil is coming straight off the oil pump with no regulation at all, its asking for a line or filter to blow.

Double the price for puroilator?? You need a new parts supplier. 🤪 Seriously. Puroilator are a good filter, Ive used them for many years. (Not on VW's though cause I dont have a filter)

You need to check the releif valve
in the case...
pull them out and make surethey are free to move up and down...

Genuine oil filters are the Best insurance...

I don't use Valvoline filters either...

Purolator have a good name...

and best to use a filter with a releif valve too...

cheers
