Is was a pretty common thing of the past overseas to drive or push the cars out onto the frozen lakes towards the end of winter and watch them sink as the ice starts to melt in spring.

a friend tried to drive his manx across the jardin river in flood, thought if he got a fast run, it would skim across. lucky his rope was tied to roll bar so when he had to start swimmin he took rope in mouth n tied his buggy to a tree on the other side. so manxs dont float or his didnt. [made it into overlander mag]
