Hi Guys
Well I fianally got my oval back. And this is what I found when I took of the tappet cover nasty. It must have fatigued when the stud snapped from the other end.
So who would have a sharft for me?
What's missing? 😂😂
oooops
You better be careful what you ask for 🙅 What was the inside of the rocker cover like ?
Sorry, cant help with the shaft.

Inside tappet cover is ok as I didn't drive it when it broke I turned the engine off straight away all in a matter of seconds of hearing a big rattley noise coming from engine.

that would have been easy to fix if You had a spare Rose...
that happened to one of the locals about 60 kms from here when going to the nationals a couple of years ago..
Someone drove Him back home to pick up another shaft..
Do You have double valve springs Rose??
Maybe you need a rev limiter....😂😂😂
or something behind the accelerator pedal...
so You can't push it to the floor 😂😊
anyway its good news Rose that you don't need a new engine...
cheers

Yeah the cause may of been the loose nut behind the wheel.
😂😂
No I don't have double valve springs.
Should be back on the road this week when I get the new sharft. And a good detail as he's filthy dirty.

In the old days with my supercharged 1775 engine I used stock shafts with dual springs.
I made some improvements in that block,
by using early 40hp blocks that are solid.
The bottom needed drilling to 10mm
and a slot made so it clamped the shaft better.(hacksaw)
Eventuall, with the stock shafts, I cut circlip grooves in them and had them nitrided.
That combo was good for even chevy diameter springs.
Most valve train failures are due to uncontrolled valve motion.
So unless you fit a rev limiter,
and perhaps replace the springs for something a little better.
you may see it re-occur.
I would not imagine that it was the drag racing that was your original cause.
Most likely long term fatigue because of NOT ENOUGH SPRING PRESSURE,
and the stud failure must have had the nut come loose.
Some prominent engine buiders have excellent relability
with stock rocker assemblies and pushrods,
with just a HD single valve spring.
Springs CAN be upgraded without engine removal nor dissassembly.

It took 10,000 miles for that nut to come loose if that was what caused the stud to break 🤪, bloody mechanic, opps thats me.🙅

Not anyones fault Ian.
Valve train harmonics can loosen anything.
Keep an eye on it all for a while once it is fixed.
A good upgrade is to use larger nuts to hold down the rocker assembly.
VW head nuts use a 15mm spanner size,
but still have the same 8mm thread.
westi wrote:That's mad Alan.
Did I read right does rose break shafts or studs and how do springs fit into this and where?
Well I did break a stud, then I replaced that. Then the sharft snapped in two.
And the springs have nothing to do with it as mine have ok cracking pressure.
Hope this answers your questions.
Maybe able to fix it tomorrow just have to look in all the vw rubbish (spares) at the workshop.
LOWBUG wrote:Did I read right does rose break shafts or studs and how do springs fit into this and where?
Thanks for the info Dave its been very helpful.
We'll keep an eye on it.
And I'm going to retire it from drag racing. And use the 58 instead to drag race.
😂

Well it's going temporarily with a standard sharft till I get a nice shiney new one.
