Not knocking your car, I'd love to have one, but... I was just checking out the vw website and its says the 103kw version has 320Nm torque (same as the R32!), yet the 118kw version has "just" 240Nm. 25% less! But then I look at the brochure which says the 118/240 version is a whole 1.3 seconds quicker to the 103/320. The 90kw/200Nm version is just 0.2 seconds behind that. Hmmm I kinda dont believe just based on those figures. I guess the 118 version must have a lot flatter curve on the dyno graph. Or is VW calculating their performance figures in the marketing department to create niches for the different elements of the range?
I just had the pleasure of driving a new (187kms on the clock) MkVI 2.0 TDI Golf today as my 'new' (3300kms) MkV 1.9TDI was in the shop for a warranty fix (nothing serious) and the new MK6 is definitely a step above the last model - you can hardly tell it's a diesel when it's idling, you can actually hear a hint of the turbo spool up, the door handles open the door more smoothly... at the risk of sounding cliche', the interior is more evolutionary than revolutionary - a lot of the switch gear is carried over from the MkV, but the centre console looks better (more 'techy' - probably a la Audi) as are the steering wheel buttons. I think the whole MkVI style is close the A3 to be honest... very nice to drive.... Dam you VW! Giving me the new model to drive! You could've let me drive something less attainable like a R36 Passat!

amazeer, the figures quoted in my brochure says;
90TSI 1.4 litre turbo
90kW@5500rpm
200 Nm torque
118TSI 1.4 litre Super & Turbo charged (my model)
118kW@5900rpm
240 Nm torque
103TDI 2 litre turbo diesel
103kW@4200
320 Nm torque
From these figures the turbo diesel will naturally have MORE torque simply because its a diesel - this does not necessarily translate into MORE kW power.
This is the opposite with petrol engines - LOW torque, but heaps of kW. With the model i got, it has the added advantage of the 'twin chargers' which
would explain the huge boost in kW. Its also really difficult to compare these three in a line-up since they are worlds apart. A better
comparison would have made using the previous TSI model (Mark V) with the 2 litre engines.
So yes, simply put, these figures have been advertised to allow the buyer to make an informed decision on which model would suit him/her, but
not there in competition with each other.
I originally wanted the TDI model, however after a bit of interrogation from the salesman, he recommended the 118TSI model (cheaper) as it
would suit our lifestyle better, not because of price but with the amount of travel we did.
Hey Oval T, i agree with ur observation about the techy interior - its fabulous - like an iPhone on wheels ! never owned a golf before, but it
was certainly better valued and MUCH better equipped than our '06 Subi Forester we traded in.
Rob, we didn't opt for a lot of additions purely to keep the costs down - so, unfortunately no, we didn't get the park assist - but it is a VERY cool feature ! I think for a small car like this, it could almost be an overated feature !
All in all - both my wife and I are very happy 😉

Do these Golfs come under the turbo laws??
The Tdi doesnt but things like the Saabs do
Same with insurance
My new Tdi Noob Beetle is cheap to insure
The GTI and GT wernt
Cause this car is efectively a Mk 5 Golf GT??
Futue te ipsum!!!
Volkswagen has applied for, and been given, some dispensation for the Golf 6:

I don't know about the insurance situation though - whether it costs more or not. It shouldn't as it's not a 'sporting' model like the GT and GTIs are.
I'm insured with RACQ - and it was about $6 more expensive to insure than the Forester which was about $500 a year to insure.
