What's going on DB.

No posting for over 3 months. People might think your fitting that turbo. That's how rumours start.

Nothing much exciting Stanley.
I am conserving funds in the saving plan to get a milling machine.
So most likely the next time the car comes out of moth balls will be the VW Warwick event.

I already knew that.
it's way to quiet so thought i'd try and get something happening.
You're always tinkering with something.

OK, did some tinkering since I had a free afternoon.

I kept thinking how it would be nice to have the best of both worlds,
from my dyno graph a while back.

If you have a look at the blue line on the graph,
you can see how much extra power and torque it had
with the long ram tubes (with high nozzles) at lower RPM.
(5-5500rpm)...at which point it has over 200 at the wheels.

But it runs out of steam fast,
so I have left two short rams with the nozzle low down to get the power up at the 8000 plus area.(red line)

Long ram tubes for max torque and short for max power at high rpm.

Now if you could only make them adjustable on the move so they start off long and then shorten as you get more revs on the tacho....

I might add, that the length of the runner before was 13" from the top, to valve seat.
And the original long runner was 19".
so I have fudged each a little closer to each other and they are now 14" and 18".

The 14" is about the same as the common length with say,
IDA's on an autocraft or Comp Elim manifold.

I also changed the intake radius inside the tubes to a more tapered version about 9 degrees.

is this all the same as making em long for the natural supercharging effect via the intake air speed being increased because the intake per cylinder is smaller?

And of course, shorter, for the increased volume in air at high rpm?

Not really to do with volumes or speed....although i am sure they contribute to some engine characteristics.

There are energy waves that flow through the charge , mainly from the opening and closing of the intake valve.
These are reflected and produced from the valve AND the top of the tubes(due to density change or reflectin at those points).
The various lengths help to cancel or amplify these pulses, some times for good and some times for bad.
Or at least that is my understanding.
Exhaust has te same pulses doing similar things, only at greater heat and volume.

From what I make of it, the intake runner length comes into effect when the intake valve shuts, creating a high pressure area (from the incoming charge) behind the valve which sends an energy wave back to the inlet opening, then sending a reverse wave back towards the valve. If the intake runner length is optimum, the reverse wave will arrive at the valve when it is open, helping fill the cylinder. (Kind of supercharging effect) Only beneficial at a very narrow rpm range.

That is a much better way to describe it Michael.

You can see in the orange curve above (up-down-up)
what happens when the engine parts (cam, heads etc) suit one rpm peak,
and the intake length suits another.

The orange curve had a peak at 6200 instead of 7800/8000 rpm.
The only change being the intake runner length.

These ones on the 9000 rpm scale will do fine.

I peel off the sticker, and inside is a precision resistor that I picked out, so that I can put in the replacement.

Based on my measurements with the multi meter, I got some resistors that were within my range,
and soldered them into the MSD carcass.
You can get these from Dick Smith or Tandy.

The legs are hollow, so I unsoldered the old, and installed the new.

Now all that was left was to try them in the car and test the limiter using the tach.

3.29 K Ohms was 4800 rpm.

3.58 K Ohms was 5100 rpm.

3.87 K Ohms was 5400 rpm.

and 4.22 K Ohms was 5800 rpm.

From the MSD chips that I had , 3000 chip measured 1.9 K Ohms and the 6000 chip measured 4.57 K Ohms.

It would have been quicker to just buy the correct chips from MSD, but I want to try a few different launch RPMs before I buy, plus I like to tinker too.
Thats brilliant Dave!!!!!! iv been trying to motivate myself to try and figure these little guys out and i wanted to make my own as well... thanks heaps for posting this stuff up, saves me alot of time and guess work🤓 thanks dave!!!!

adjustable ram tubes were used on the le mans winning mazda 787 rotary back in 91 or 92 but you can just imagin the budget they had for that program! But knowing dave his budget is probally what the mazda team spent on breakfast at lemans(no disrepect intended dave)so we probally won't see any on daves car soon👎sniffle:

couple of light springs up to the wing,

What would make them slide down against the spring... air pressure from the car moving, or is it just that the engine will be drawing that much more air through it would sort of suck them down ???

That is the theory.
But I am too lazy to actually do anything I think.

Right, OK - sounds reasonable I think.

With only two months til Warwick I thought it was time to pull my finger out.
I plan to replace the single blade spring plates with dual ones from a type 3.
But because I use the short tortion bars, here is my plan.

Just have to fit them now.

Hi Nick,
yeah just a bit of extra resistance to flex I hope.

Not sure that it was a problem really,
but can't hurt.
Also, could not hurt to replace the rubber bushes with urethane!!

I could have sworn I had them in there already,
but looks like only the inner was urethane, and the outer was stock brazil rubber.

Not bad for mid 1.40 sixties.
