What did you run again John??

good to here everything went well, i can say i know what it feels like with that power, pretty cool. Something doesnt look right with the boost on your dyno graph as it should hold full boost all the way but yours seems to drop off, i know mine made full boost by 3500rpm and stays there till rev limiter cuts in. Once you get the bugs sorted im sure you will have some fun!!!
BEING ASPIRATED FEELS GREAT BUT BEING BLOWN TAKES THING TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL....
its the boost curve you tools it falls of because the turbo is shagged.it come s on well and falls over,no biggy.
as for tdo5 are you guys serious,i wouldn't put a tdo5 on anything that i wanted to go,td 04 & td05 rubbish.
vf is what it came out with so why not that or better.why go backwards.
Mick,
Just a comparison for u between turbos. Paul & I had identical power out puts of 150kw at the wheels. he used the TD04 with 12psi, peak power was at 5500rpm from memory. I have the larger TD05 running only 8psi & peak power was at 6600rpm. It's now at 6000rpm but that was with some breathing mods.
Don't get too caught up in the whole "if u change the turbo u will get 50kw more at the wheels" speel. It rolls off the tounge easy enough, but power from a wrx engine in a beetle compared to an actual wrx are 2 very different things. Theres probably only about 4 tuners in the country that have had a wrx powered bug on their dyno.
Many late model rexxy owners put the TD05 on their cars. Do some research on Rexnet & RS Liberty forums.
There are still many variables to making reliable power with what u currently have, what are the air fuel ratios for starters?
jak riddle me this, why walk backwards when forwards is so much easier, why put on another second hand item that might possibly have the same problem.why put on a turbo that out dates the engine.why not put on the same or better than it came with.
and if you think it won't make another 50 kw's,fair enough, but just because you don't think it won't doesn't mean it isn't possible.
and 4 tuners in australia that have tuned wrx powered vw's on there dyno no your stabbing at things there,.
all the temp's water, air blah, blah air/ fuel.blah/blah.dude get over it, it runs cooler and cleaner than it would in a rexy, the dyno guy, paul. was spewing that it didn't have a good turbo on it because it has so much potential.he rang after spending 1/2 on the tune to say the turbo was shit.we told him to do the best he could with what he had.it's no biggy.
but in the future will be easy to get more power out of it.and it won't be a td05,unless there is going to be 2 off them.then you will see a tdo5 make some good power.
anyhow that took me about 4 hrs to write due to one handed wonder .will chat soon.
i will speak to paul to get the print out's for you if it's a must, everything was sweet, the only reason boost pressure was shown was for mikey,
Brad.
Mick can put whatever turbo he likes on it. I only gave my experience of the TD05 as thats what I have experienced. It would be silly of me to give advice on the VF series turbo as I've never had one.
Theres nothing to get over?. Was purely giving advice on what I have experienced with my own conversion. My questions aren't a stab at anyone, I'm genuinly interested in this stuff. Not so interested in pages of debate over wether or not someone should put Kadrons on their 1600 LOL.
If someone has done a similar thing to me, but another way to acheive a better resullt, then I want to learn, only an idiot thinks they know everything.
Just would be nice to see Mick now enjoy the car. I'm stoked it's finished & its not even mine. I hope he gets used to 200hp @ the wheels first. Then go nuts & see if it can stay in a straight line with 200kw , would be lots of fun!. i'm not that game myself.
regards
Jak
Actually the only limited VF turbo experience is in Matts Bug, Back in mid 2005 Matt put a VF24 (from memory) on, at the time he drove up to the Coast to take me for a run it had "only" 218hp @ the wheels on 14psi. It was BALLISTIC. It made my car feel slow in comparison. There was no lag, it was on from the turn of the key. It was quick on a $850 wrecker engine that is still going to today, would probably be even more nuts on a late model STI engine.
I think? the VF24 turbo's are used on the Group N rally cars?
i like the look of this one from the list by 72type3wrx
"VF38
Twin scroll turbo with titanium turbine and shaft. Smaller compressor housing than VF36/VF37 provides tremendous spool up capabilities but less top end than VF36/37. The spool capabilities of this turbo are demonstrated on the JDM Legacy GT, which reaches peak torque at 2400RPM."
i cant believe how small the turbo is pictured earlier in this post, it makes my turbo look so much bigger. I used to work for subaru and we used to comment on how small the turbos were and how much better they would go with a bigger turbo. my compressor housing has a 60mm intake and in comparison to the 50 cent piece its a far bit bigger. Bigger is better....

yeh they are small, restrictive too - i think Rocknrob pointed it out earlier. Comes on so hard and early too - see how it goes. Its all bolt on stuff (basically) anyways.
Brakes first (Mr Engineers request).
Does anybody here run a bigger b/j front brake kit? I have dropped spindles so this make fitment a little harder. Anyone have experience with this?

whats the issue with the dropped spindles not working with other brakes? is it because of where the beams upper mount joins in relation to the centerline of the axle? surely someone could design a suitable caliper bracket to suit farily easily...? i cant picture anything else being a problem from my almost non existant experience with dropped spindles? just a thought 🙂

rizzo baby,it's so hard to write /read how it was meant to sound,no intent on sounding nasty if thats how it came across,i am not the most literate person at the best of times.and i only have the one eagle finger pecking at the keyboard at once.i was just trying to give poor old mikey a break,he doesn't know heaps about cars,so everything is taken in then processed, and then he starts to question everything, which is cool, because he learns heaps, but sometimes it's a bit hard to listen to so many different opinions.

thats pretty much the gist of the issue, if you wish to run drop spindles with a bigger disc you would need to have a really big offset to push the disc further away from the stub and control arms and other than a ridiculously narrowed beam or even more ridiculous flared guards, it makes it hard to work around.... with standard spindles you can have the discs cup over the whole thing and still retain a standard offset or narrower (see links below for pics of my kit, runs commodore calipers, made by vintage)

Mick, are you running wide 5 wheels or 5 stud porsche or 4 stud VW standard?
If you running anything other than wide 5 it opens up your options considerably. I think you can still run the disc pretty darned close to the hub surface. There is plenty of meat in those dropped spindle to allow the current mounting points to be ditched and new ones machined to allow for the larger disc.
Have a look at VWCools disc brake kit on parts for sale forum. It's not meant for dropped spindles but it may very well be able to be modified to suit. I reckon the hub and disc would fit a treat and then it's just a case of mounting the caliper.
I know it's more money but if you want to go custom and don't have the expertise to do the work yourself then it is gonna cost. If I had the spare time I'd say send me the parts and I could figure something out but I have trouble finding the time/money to get my project moving forward 🙂
