Just did my first oil change on '72 super & I think I've stripped the sump plug thread. It may have been partially stripped already (only did it up hand tight - left handed...), but it definitely feels bad & has slow oil drip from plug - can any Gurus ut there let me know what I've got myself in for.....

Just replace the plate that the sump plug goes into. Get a strainer kit from a veedub shop as well when you get the plate

Hand was left, not the thread... Plug had some silicone type stuff around it when I took it off, so It may have been previousy over done... My excuse anyway...
Thanks for the advice...

you need a copper washer or cloth washer and it dosent need to be tight to seal as it is not under presure.
A little thread seal paste may help to get you out of trouble.

Hi

In about 1973 VW deleted the sump plug from the middle of the plate, forcing mechanics to remove the plate and clean the strainer. If you can, get another plate or weld up the plug on the old one.
