no, not any more, i had trouble getting it to even get to operating temperture, so before warwick when i changed a couple things, i decided to leave it off, just from laziness 😂 and now it runs perfect temp.... driven it in traffic and all is great.... so why mess with it... lol plus its makes easy access to get to everything 🙂

say what u want but it works, i now realise my cooling system was wwwaaaayyyyy overkill..... might be able to put the tinware back on when i go upto a bigger motor...

Sorry Adam, I think you should definately be running the rear tin too....
What is your 'cool temps', where are you measuring this, what brand/style (elec or mech) of gauge and have you head temp senders too????

Car looks great as always.

hey Matt, without the tinware it barely reaches 96 degrees celcius, in hot weather and heavy driving, im using an autometer pro comp gauge with an autometer sender unit which is tapped into the oil pan on my motor, its an electrical setup and has been verified that its reading the correct temperature by using an infra red thermometer aswell...... i know its usually a big nono for vw not to run all the tinware but in this case it helps....at warwick i ran all weekend and went in the cruise to town, the hottest it every got was 96 degrees and usually sat alot lower at around the late 70's to mid 80's.....

Your comp is very low too adam.(oval ports have big chambers, and only 1775cc).
.....that is a good way to keep your engine cool,(and low on power too😂)

haha, yes i know dave..... my and mikes fuck up, we just assumed without measuring first and didnt cut the heads out enough, as soon as i get some money up im getting forged pistons, clearance cutting and bumping up the comp again..... still gotta say, its making pretty good power considering the circumstances and size of motor 😂 oh yeah, decided im going 2332, if im pulling the case apart i might aswel go bigger cubes while im at it right? lol

Gotta ask, if you oil temp is not effected by the lack of tinware, whats you head temps like? remembering that all that heat coming off the headers is now being sucked through the fan shroud and down over the heads. But you already know that so I shouldn't tell you how to suck eggs.

hmmmm... i have a duct running to the back of the shroud feeding it fresh air, but ill bite.... ill install a head temp sensor and see what it reads at the heads..... should be interesting.... im not saying what iv done is right, but it helped one problem i was having..... plus the car basically only gets driven at the track (usually without a decklid) or the occasional cruise at the moment... guess we'll see.... ill install the sensors, and take it for a good run to kiama or something.... take the tinware just incase😂.... i never intended to leave it off, it just gave me good results, this was an experiment in the first place so y not do it properly 🤪

question..... and the person whom would know the answer, knows who he is........ what is the acceptable or prefered head temperature?

No decklid will definately help. Gauge reads correctly, cool. What is the oil pan exactly, do you mean the oil sump plate?

yeah but unless people challenge the thinking behind these things, there wont be any discussions too learn from.......maybe you need an AVD history lesson, some interesting things have gone down in years past

i really like this car's style!!

POLAK.......do you run an oil thermostat?........they work really well, allow motor to heat up quick, then make use of a good cooling system when under strains of hard running.

what was the compression again?

What is negative about stating the obvious ?

I pointed out the fact that running any size VW engine without that tinware is foolish
so to you Colonel lighten up old son😂😂😂

Totally agree Daimo, if people don't challenge ideas no one learns anything. It shits me that often we need to not say anything when we see a bogus piece of advice as someone may 'moderate' or whatever cause we may hurt someones feelings. So not only does the truth go awol, but those that dont know any better learn the wrong thing.

Anyway, I do like Adam's style too, just dont like seeing no rear breast plate, but I wont waste my time on the keyboard with that one.

The biggest advantage with using an oil thermostat with a full flow system with a remote cooler is that with the thermostat mounted as close as possible to the engine (simple to do) the engine, ie. bearings and valve train, see full oil volume and pressure MUCH quicker on initial start up.

sorry, my background is chevs and holdens so i still sometimes use the terminology 😂 i mean the sump, i have an extended sump but my oil temp sender is in the block off plate that is at the bottom right hand corner of the original sump ie case

lol lets not talk about the compression.... its a pissy 8.1:1.... bit of a sore point yet to be rectified 🤪

sometimes the discussions are stupid and offencive but that is just the weak minority who need to make themselves feel better by bagging others, most of the time though i love avd as different topics creat discussion and helps us all share and learn. I bet everyone here, whether they are experienced or not can learn something interesting from somebody else.... for example, i never would have thought about the thermostat in my oil line.... it will solve my cold running problems and i will now be able to retain my rear tinware piece. AVD is a great tool so why worry about some of the 'tools' hahahaha 😂

cool

Id be very interested to see temperature differences if you changed compression but nothing else...current ratio must suit the w110 to be making the dyno numbers

Got to love Big heads and 48s on 1776s !

i run my turbo fastback with only the upright porsche fan housing and no tinware seal as its a bit hard to seal up a type 3, but with the dry sump and oil coolers it runs around the 80 t0 90 degree c which in anyones books that pretty good for a turbo engine. Even when it was on the dyno and giving it heaps it got up to 100 but once we backed it off it comes back to around 85-90.
BEING ASPIRATED FEELS GREAT BUT BEING BLOWN TAKES THING TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL....
