Okay, so ive got a 1971 beetle, its a standard and have a few questions.
Firstly i want to change the gear box oil because it hasnt been done in ages. I know ow im going to fill it etc but what with, ive got 3 litres of castrol VMX 80, i dunno if this is the right stuff its just here thats all.And i know i need 2.5 litres of whatever i put in it.
Secondly engine oil, i do my oil every six months, at the moment ive got 15w 40 in it, its a good oil, only thing is the idiot light is begging to come on a bit more while im driving and its got the right amount in it. So this means ive gotta go thincker oil right. What is the next thickest oil i should be using, i know this is a highly controvestial issue i just want to know.
Um this is for the 64, what parts need to be changed for a 12v conversion, like is it everything or just things like the starter, alt/gen etc.
When going to wider rims do i need to beef up my axels, or can they cope.
thats it for now, thanks for the help.
the gearbox oil change isnt hard
get yrself a 17mm hex allen key to undo the 2 drain holes and the filler hole, also a syringe from auto one is good to suck up the new oil and fill in the side hole let it drain for a while and clean off all the metalic particles from the drain plugs with a rag
Hi
Try cleaning the idiot light switch, they sometimes clog up. I use Nulon 15w 40 in Davids car, you could maybe go thicker in summer.
You can leave your 6 volt starter.

Okay. Will clean it up this arvo. I think i will put penrite 15w-40 in it again.
And i am going to get another bug for parts for the 64. Mainly engine etc and am after a list of stuff to get to convert the 64 to 12volt.
for the engine oil: Castrol GTX2 is perfect for aircooled VWs.
for the 6v to 12v conversion:
generator & voltage regulator,
coil,
battery,
all bulbs including the dashboard lights,
flasher relay,
choke.
Will require a ballast resistor for the wiper or new wiper motor or a regulated 6V supply for the wiper motor.
Will require a new fuel level sender or a regulated 6V supply for the fuel level sender.
No need to change starter motor.
I think that's everything! Umm... not sure what to do about the horn.

Okay, well im pretty much getting a new engine for the 71 so the 64 can have the coil, generator, and carb so thats the choke bit done yeah, and i can get my hands on a battery, and could also get another 70 something bug for the rest of the bits.
Thanks for the list hopefully itll be drivable for the nats.
I've found out that you can leave the 6v horn in place: it only gets used for very short periods so it's not going to overheat from 12v.
p.s. if you have multiple questions you can start a new topic for each one, that way you can give a meaningful topic title for each one, which will help people find the information they are looking for and will help people to help you 🙂

Okay, thats good because the 6v horn is louder then my 12v one and a only put em in one so i didnt have heaps going at once
