Are new oil coolers are any good? Building a 1776 for my Type1 and updating to a doghouse cooler. Wondering whether to use the old genuine cooler (if I can clean and test it) or would I be better off with a brand new one?

to the best of my knowledge a quality new oil cooler should be of equal to the original unit.

WOULD BE BEST TO BUY A New ONE...

We don't seem to replace them here in Australia but they are always for Sale in the USA...

You can always use a remote oil cooler etc too...

personally if it was me id go the t4 2L kombi one and just widen the housing. you only have to widen about an inch and it fits. ive got pics some where ill try to dig them out.
its a wider cooler

here we go

just ignore the modified hover bit as it went on to a t4 conversion motor and it was a better way of doing it.

Thanks barls, good suggestion but I have just been offered a new type1 cooler so reckon I will go with that (saves hassleing a mate to weld for me)

There is no advantage to running the T4 cooler over the standard beetle cooler, engine oil temps will remain the same..............yes you would think that being a bigger cooler it would but it doesnt !

speeking from experience an outside cooler would be best as it leaves the option to upgrade to a larger if the need arises, also the cooler in the housing restricts air flow a bit but a bigger engine will require better cooling.so close off the doghouse and live happyyrly after
👍👍😂🙅🥷😬🤓

no but the added volume from the bigger cooler can only be a good thing when you look at thermal mass. even if its only just bigger

Waste of time IMO

Thermal mass has more to do with Pink bats
and very little to do with oil cooling the way i see it😂😂

as i see it as a hydraulic tech a larger volume of oil takes longer to heat up that a smaller volume exposed to the same conditions.
therefore thermal mass has a great deal to do with it.
