Last night my 61 Beetle started to make some disturbing noises every time I put my foot on the clutch. Its a nasty metallic grinding sort of noise. She still shifts fine and there's no change in clutch feel. The noise is only apparent when the clutch is in.

Can anyone suggest a likely cause? Bearing perhaps?

FWIW, I was told a month or so back that the front gear box mount had a split in it...

Hi

the original clutch bearing in early beetles, was a carbon type which do wear out... then metal to metal...

split front gearbox mount doesn't usually affect anything...

Thanks for the response. I took her for a short drive yesterday and there were no dodgy noises. Hmmm.... perhaps it needs to be fully up to operating temp? I guess I'll see what happens over the next few days, but I am mentally preparing myself to spend some quality time in my garage.
