Guys
Fitted a SAAS steering wheel and boss kit to a 1973 beetle, I have clearance for fingers on the Indicator stalk but the windscreen wiper stalk is near touching the wheel. Is there different wiper stalks on different models.
Cheers
NOPE...
that is a common problem...
You need to use a dished steering wheel...
I have a nice new wooden steering wheel which had the same problem..
hitting the blinker switch arm all the time...
I have seen people make spacers for the steering wheel..
usually out of alloy.. or made from another steering wheel boss
all the bosses I have seen are the same width...
so, they must be made for the deep dished steering wheels.
like the original VW ones...

PS: its a wonder someone doesn't make spacers for them..

How deep is your boss kit? I would say that you just need a deeper boss kit. My old Formuling wheel doesn't have much dish on it, but the boss kit is about 100mm deep and that spaces the wheel out nicely.
There are different stalks, some are cranked like yours others are straight, weather they are interchangeable I don't know.
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross a road without being asked for it's motive!
Everyone except Waveman is guessing.
There are definitely different depth bosses, for exactly this problem. I have a flat wheel (non dished) and the boss is 100 mm long, and I get 50 mm clearance between the stalk and the wheel.
careful when ordering another boss as the shaft spline got smaller around 1975 onwards.
In answer to your specific question, it isnt so much different stalks, but on pre 1971-ish the wiper control was on the dash so that is probably the change year for bosses when ordering.
We have sportz steering wheels on a few of our bugs and there is a good inch or more of clearance between the lever.
put a nice standard L bug steering wheel back on it.
or ask joel he will kno

car forums. where a lot of peoples good intentions end up taking a good old car off the road forever never ever to see the road again. 🥲
Just measured the Boss thats on this car and its 75mm. Will see if the shop has a really cheap boos and I will buy that and take a 25mm piece of that and use it as a spacer or just make up an inch spacer.
Thanks Guys
problem here is that boss kit is the wrong one
Like uber said its the squat one for a dished wheel like this
you have 2 options get the correct boss, or the correct style wheel.
If you go the boss route check your splines first cos late 73 was the change over so it could be either or.
All bug/ghia/type3 column wiper switches were the same in aus. the straight ones Donn mentioned are baywindow kombi
SAAS used to have two boss kits available for most cars - a BOSS for a dished wheel and a Super BOSS for flat wheels, which is wider.
(The MR2 I recently purchased had a Super BOSS and a deep dish wheel. You could hardly reach the stalks at all. 🙅)

hot tip guys, i have both short & long boss' one is saas, the other, wait for it.... is autotechnica, ordered it thru repco about 4-5yrs ago but should still be made, works fine with non dished wheels, the shorter one, obviously with dished wheel, i like the longer one though, ill try get pics up of the two together if you like?
(for 71' column though)
that said, the one in the pic up top looks like my long one.... measurements would help at the least, easiest option would be new slightly dishier wheel, or even from wreckers...

WOW... 100MM WOULD BE GREAT...
so, there are many short bosses for the dished wheels...
but many wheels aren't dished... lol

short SAAS boss, i assume most of you would be familiar with this one? (75mm)
and this one...
autotechnica 100mm, ordered thru repco, id take a guess at saying autobarn would also have them, most likely order only
on a side note though i swapped my indicator only stalk for a later indicator/wiper setup & the wiper arm is SLIGHTLY closer to the wheel
your right about the dished wheels though, i cant find many in my travels, only about 10mm offset then there seems to be a void till about 75mm, short boss & super dished wheel may be the solution, its not cheap though 🙁

Interesting that an early Golf or Passat wheel fits my Super. I might have to look closely at these cars in wreckers in future!

its actually a common spline to all the extended germany family - Porsche, vw and some audi all use that spline from 74 upto about 93 ish
