It has been roughly two months since parting with my dear beetle, and of course I need another one. The plan this time is to find a clean body and build up a strong reliable daily 1916cc- with some extra boot for novice hillclimbing 🙂
Now, I'm tossing up between Wayne Penrose or pobjob.
I've called pobjoy (and subsequently have no phone credit left) and have gotten a Price on a standard 1916cc that will produce around 70bhp.
Penrose has (roughly) quoted me a grand and a half more than pobjoy to build a 1916 with around 100-110bhp.
Now I know that horsepower isn't everything, and I'm not trying to start arguments against the credibility of vw builders, but would people recommend spending that little bit more for that 30+ bhp?
Is anyone running the standard 1916 from pobjob? Or Any references for wayne?
I understand that pobjob is well established in the 1916 field and would love to hear of some experience from some fellow dubbers!
you need to re-read your post, - "Penrose has (roughly) quoted me a grand and a half more than penrose to build "
anyhow. If hillclimb is what you are thinking of getting into... you need to talk to the people who are experianced - Craig torrens, bat69, sides (dave), vw cool (glenn) .... experiance is where your (their...) best ideas come from.
Id say go with what is most effective for your needs. you want to drive it every day? then having a realiable, long lasting engine is what you need.
Also, I am sure you know, but there is no point having 100hp, but stock brakes all round..... cause you aint stocking for nothing then...
I can only say that Stan's work is the work of a true craftsman.
Stan builds things absolutely correctly and has thousands of engines under his belt - so that experience is included in the deal.
Stans engines are good enough to put in an aircraft - and that is my measure of quality.
Smile - It confuses people😀

Sorry edited now- writing on an iPhone makes life a bit difficult!
Of course mustard, brakes are certainly essential, but I feel I could do those myself, whereas I could never build my own engine haha.
And yeah I plan to get some info from these guys asap. With regards to hillclimbing it's something in the future, but not so much the near future- I guess the main plan is to have a good streeter with some power to boot.
Yes Stans 1916 - solid, reliable. People tend to forget that the Germans are the masters of metallurgy - I work for Siemens another famous German engineering company - and quality of components is fantastic and when well machined and assembled - very nice.
As was mentioned earlier the experience over 20+ years of people that have had and FLOGGED Stan's engines without mercy is well documented.
$ for reliable fun = Stan Pobjoy.

Mate you need to compare apples with apples how much for Stan to build you extra 30 HP? or Rod to build standard?
Both these guys can build em no doubt, but you need to make even comparisons.
BTW in my opinion 30 HP $1500 is very reasonable.
Hey Ian I was just going by what pobjoy was saying 🙂
he did mention quite firmly the new-age dyno results are often different to what he feels is the engines proper power output.
As for durie I've only herd good things so I will have to have a geez!
At this point I'm leaning toward pobjoy, terence do you know
how long the turn around is on the rebuild?
Decide on what you want and let the engine builder quote you from there, you cant compare quotes for completly different products. BTW Rod Penrose and Wayne Penrose are different businesses, give both a call if your near wollongong.
Have you bought a car yet. There's great L bug on Ebay at the moment in Melbourne with all the gear on it but no motor.
Get an apples to apples quote from the engine builders.
Why not go Subi power with one of those reversed R&P transmissions? You will easily have double the HP for about the same money with 5 speeds and the 1916 will still need a stout gearbox.
Pretty much agree with what's been said here already.
Choose your builder, tell him what the car is and what it's going to be used for and they'll guide you. And like Craig has said, in that process you should be able to see who you want building your engine.
Stan I know is more than happy to talk things through, and he definitely knows his stuff. Same goes for Dave Butler.
I've had engines built by both Stan and DB and would happily recommend either - current engine done by DB. Both engines I spent a lot of time driving with a big stoopid grin on my face.

Nah Vlad, 130 is a hell of a lot of power in a beetle!
Pobjob was telling me that a lot of tweaked (by which I mean tuned correctly) stock 1600 are only around 30-40bhp, if that.
