I have seen no production Type3 with wide 5 dome hub caps standard. In 66 most Beetles from made at Wolfsburg had wide 5 flat hub cap but you could option disc brakes in 66 and had a hub cap like this.

If you see a hub cap like this on a Type3 in Australia get excited because this is what German 66-67 type3s had. 1500s told us there were a few fully imported 66 fastbacks.

Mmmm nice type3lover. This car has

1968 chassis No.

12v system

1600 dual port

Savanna Beige

1600 badge on the deck lid

Still has wide 5 drum brakes

316N? Looks like its got all the chrome. What is the difference between an Australian 316N and a 316S?

What is the Model No. in your Volkswagen Service Booklet?

What is the interior color?

Absolutely corrrect!

Might be way off but I thought the N had the single side draught carburettor. Or is that the 1500N? I'm confused lol.

I'll track down the service booklet...I know I kept it somewhere!

Ahhh Also your car has thin side chrome, makes sense because VW Australia stopped producing trim in late 67 at the end of the Aussie Beetle ( although the T1 1300 Custom still had it in 68)

Type3lover I thought all 68 were 4 stud wheels? mine is 318200071 so not much newer than yours. 4 stud wheels, 12 volt, discs up front, heated seats etc 😉
Aussie built type 3's from 1963 to 1969 atleast ( including the CKD cars) have the body number tag. I don't have a 1970 model, but by 1971 there is no body number tag and the compliance plate no longer has "Made in Germany". The fully imported cars don't have this tag.

Have never heard of Heated Seats as an option for any year Type 3. Could you please post a picture or description to clarify,
Cheers, Pat.

The 1500N did have the single side draught carb as did the 1500A which continued to 1968 in other parts of the world, maybe even Australia. Some repair manuals even list a 1600A. Did this 1600A engine have the single carb with single port heads still?? Some of you may recall maybe mid 90s Volksworld Mag?? had a story about "Plain Jane" which from memory had the single carb 1600 and drum brakes up front. But then again to confuse us more, a British site gives the Type 3 1600A as having a single carb 1500 engine!!!!!!!! Anyone still got that mag??

The Type 3 got disc brakes in 66, even on the 1500 Notch hence the 4 stud wheels and the resulting "new" hubcap fixing. We saw none of these here... well maybe a couple of imports. We should be able to find plenty of early hubcaps but just try finding really good ones.

We know the Fasty got the 1600 engine with twin carbs right from square one in 66 and the Square got the 1600 twin carb dual port in '67 sometime but none of our cars got the discs generally until '69.

One thing we have to be careful of is not to compare much of the local production trim and some running gear with that of full German assembly as we actually made the basic version in most cases.

I was just looking at an Australian 1967 all models brochure. There was a pic of a 1500 Deluxe type3 as 1500S wrote about in another thead. On the outside it looked just like Vice's car but with a 1500 single carb engine, that car must be a 67 316N. I think type3lovers car is a 68 316N and VW Australia dropped the 316S Dec 67 because the CKD cars were coming. Mmmmm Maybe

Hi
I believe the side strips on custom beetles was stainless steel same as the bumpers...

I don't think it was used in German made vehicles.??

My 67 imported beetle has those(although not still on the car, they were superceded by genuine Gasburners!).
Lets clear this up right here and now...

That nipple 4 stud hubcap was on German built models from chassis 316000001 up to 317139332 and is part number 311601151B. It then went to part number 311601151D which is the conventional 4 stud hub cap as we know it from chassis number 317139333. 66/67 german built beetles had the same up to about Sept/October 1967 and then went to the non nipple 4 stud hub cap.

Also of worthy note is the fact that German built type 3's, type 3 ghias and Type1 ghias had wheel trims as standard equipment, part number 311601155 from beginning of 4 stud production in August 1965...

so a certain Pigalle owner on here should have both the nipple 4 stud hub cap and the correct wheel trims which will be marked "CK VW 311601155"around the inner perimeter and have the grey plastic grommet in the valve hole as per all genuine wheel trims...

Australian built Type 3's had the flat early 5 stud hub cap through to 1964, part number 311601151. Australian 65-67 models had the Euro beetle flat 5 stud hubcap part number 131601151(looks like an early type 3 cap but with rounder edges when compared to an early one). They went to the conventional 4 stud cap 311601151D as we know them in 1968.

My original Aussie 1965 1500S came with the early flatter hubcaps with recessed VW emblem in the centre, so probably some delay in the change over of parts. Another way to tell the later 5 stud caps is the raised VW emblem.

I know of 2 pigalles still in Australia, a Type 3 ghia in NSW and a Fastback in Vic, both with original nipple caps I think 😉

Here is some pics of a 65 Type 3 Panel Van that I once owned. It was Ruby red in Colour, which I think nearly all Aussie panels were. Mine had chassis number PVC147 attached behind the spare wheel.

Steve Carter told me they were used by Harris Tea as delivery vehicles.

here is the Body number.

And Lee there were German panel vans produced albeit in small numbers. Most that have come up are in Norway/Sweden.

4 stud IN AUSTRALIAN BUILT CARS started in 68. In Europe, it was 66. One of my cars as well as a few others made it onto these shores. I have seen several imported 66 type 3's over the years, most still sporting their original nipple 4 stud hub caps.

Do these look 5 stud to you?

Aussie panel vans were predominantly 65 models. Funnily enough, I have records of more white than red Australian panel vans. here is a pic of a red one...

Anybody else have an imported S out there? I have also seen Variant S wrecks too, but never a complete one.

Rob Waldon's old Notch above??!!

Not too many of the imported ones left Dyno. I seem to have the only one here in NSW although there was the one rusting away in a paddock at Young, NSW, owned by Marco ? who was atthe Fyshwick VW place in late 90s. Anyone know what happened to Marco and this S? Aaron has two in Adelaide but only one will ever be a runner as an original S. The other will be some sort of race car. This one is only about 4 numbers different production ti my S so no doubt came off the line the same day in Germany. Not sure if the white one from Melbourne got sold and remained in the country. Was for sale 12 months or so back.
