This was an idea from an ol' mate that came down the road, hes a pal of mine and was reminising about his genuine manx and baja days, showing me photos...
He was saying that before he capped the heater ducts for his fan shroud, he rekons there was a great deal of pressure gushing out of it. and was thinking at the time yrs ago whether to have some filter element in line with the dual heater ducts on the fan shroud with dual carbs and perhaps get 1 or 2 psi or sumfin, assuming that the air doesn't get too warm from the oil cooler, and assumign that most of the heat comes from the heads 'after' it passes the heater ducts and doesn't interfer with the 'intake air temps'... unless u have small water to air intercoolers (the straight tube ones) prior to the carbs IF u wanna get so crazy for small psi....
What do you guys think? I got other plans for my donk, but thought, wow! this would be an interesting experiment! If it can run the pressure for the heater all the way up the front, why not use the fan shroud heater ducts for pressurised blow-through intake...
A cold air intake scoop to the outside of the engine bay would be worth a lot more power than heating up the intake air by breathing through the fan shroud. I doubt that it would be able to generate any useful boost. For one thing, the system is open to the bottom of the engine still for cooling, so any air which might be pressurised will take the path of least resistance, ie. straight out through the cylinder fins. Hence, you would be supplying warm air at roughly atmospheric pressure.
This would work like a very mild supercharger I would think, with oil cooler fan speed being proportional to crank speed.
Sounds like an intersting experiment, but the extra pressure may be neutralised by the raised air temp.
But I'd be intersted to know how it goes if you try it.
Actually, if we are worried about the heat of the oil cooler, an external oil cooler could be fitted!
Because then it would get air directly from the fan before it has a chance to pass over anything hot. As you said with the system open to the bottom air, u would want some cold air intake for the fan shroud opening.... some form of massive duct.
As for air taking the path of least resistance, well i'm not sure, but when this guy was fittin his 'block off' tabs to the fan shroud, he rekons there was suprisingly quite alot of pressure coming out of those ducts when left open despite it also blowing over the cooling tin.
One could even upgrade the fan size. having the second route for the air over the cylinder heads would be the BOV when the throttle closes and no air path through the carb exists i guess. Only way is to give it a go!
Everybody in my house are farting into bottles. I was going to plum it into the vaccum port on the carby (fitted a Bosch 009 dizzy) to act as an octane boooster.
Dad converted the toyota to run on old chip fat. You wouldn't notice any difference. Bert that owns the fish and chip shop say's since he been giving the old oil to Dad, business has increased 800%
I remember years back. in a car mag they were selling electric hair dryer style turbos ( straight fan type not snail shaped).
calming around 10-20kw increase.
Also for a experiment me and my brother mocked up a large 12v blower to an escort 2L, which previous did 168kmh top speed, was increased to 180kmh flat.
I couldn't believe it ether but it defiantly did something. lol those were the days.
