The roll cage looks good - no unecessary bends - should give a really stiff base for suspension tuning; I reckon 'noveight' will be quicker than 'oldeight', despite the weight increase.

Hi, thanks for the comments.

Peter.......Hope to try a few 'changes', starting with softer rear torsion bars.👍

Paul........I'm aiming for Wakefield, but next month!🤪

Dave.......Or should I call you Hawk-eye - 'aerodynamic aid'. wait and see.😂

Cheers, Greg

It's now BLACK - well sort of. The combination of my lack of painting skills, and a fairly rough body shell, has resulted in something close to the 'old' No. 8. Camo has kindly offered to post some pics - thanks Kev.

I am putting Humpty-Dumpty back together again now - without all the King's horses etc.😂 It's a slow process ( I'm not as quick as I once was ), but I am aiming for the 6th October. That's the next GEAR (Golden Era Auto Racing) day, and it would be a perfect opportunity to 'sort it out'.

Back to work now.

Cheers, Greg

The rules, as per GEAR Club, are fairly easy-going - roughly pre 1961. Later (modern) stuff is frowned upon, such as EFI, etc.

Will be picking up some last-minute bits from Steve Muller this week, including the transmission ( 'fixed' by Adrian ). These two blokes have been so helpful👍Oh yes, and Warb is doing some new ' No. 8 ' stickers for me - thanks mate. Even though I will be off to Morgan Park with my sons, Dave & Tim next week - they're running their Lotuses in the 1 hour race - I should be able to finish No.8 Beetle in time for the GEAR day. It's Wed, 6th October, at Wakefield Park.🤪

Cheers, Greg

Looking good Greg, what are the fins on the drum brakes for, cooling? Also are they interference fit.

The fins help with cooling, but also help to keep the drums 'round'. The drums tend to distort - especially if the wheel bolts are not tightened correctly. Yes, they are 'shrunk' on, with a 0.035" interference.

Hi Greg,
can you share some specs and history on your motor.
Judging by the times you ran before the crash, it must have "pick-up".

Is it an engine combination that has evolved from many years, or a recent build?

I am interested to know what carbs(48IDA's?),
and also what oiling system you have used to keep the bearings under control through corners.

Thanks,
Dave.

Hi Dave,

Hope it doesn't sound like I'm being cagey, but sheet metal is my game - engines scare the hell out of me.😵‍💫

Steve Muller built the engine - I just told him that I wanted, a mild, tourquey motor that would pull from around 3000, and go to 6000rpm. I got exactly what I asked for.👍 Carbs are 48 IDF, oil is Mobil 1 5W50. A deep sump and external cooler seem to work OK.

If you really want to know the tech. ins & outs, Steve would be the bloke to speak to. I'm not one to play the 'secrets game', so whatever he wants to tell you is fine by me.

Cheers, Greg

Just got back from Morgan Park - it was WET!!!!! Son David and Scott Bargwanna had a great win in the Prod. Sports 1 hour race. Other son Tim and Geoff Noble were 3rd, when an electrical fault stopped the car out on the track. Geoff managed to re-start it, and got back to 4th. A great weekend, except for the rain.

Tomorrow I'll be back onto No. 8! Thanks for the nice numbers Warb.👍 You should think of doing that stuff for a living.😉

Cheers, Greg
