including footage of Stan Pobjoy in the open-wheeler , unknown driver in white bug , Wayne Penrose in the WPVW sports sedan , unknown driver in yellow formula libra...
I am in my 12A rotary powered beetle at Amaroo Park Raceway for the 1995 VW Nationals.....
I should have used something better than my everyday street tyres.....
hypo-vw wrote:in 1989 , brother Rod decided to purchase a formula vee for racing . He removed the 1200 engine and fitted a 2276cc twin webber engine that I had built for him .
He took it to Huntley hillclimb and was very fast on slicks , until one day the vee ended up-side-down with him in it after a rear suspension mounting broke . Fortunatley Rod was not injured , but the same could not be said for the vee.....
Breaking the back of Mako .... little wonder they were only a bed frame with a seat and a spot to bolt the front suspension and the 1200cc engine.... suppose that one less Mako out there in Historic Formula Vee Land.
footage includes Reubens WRX turbo choptop beetle , Wayne Penrose in the WPVW sports sedan prior to purchasing new wheels & slicks ( cool tyre smoke ), Steve Muller in the blue golf....
my apologies again for the poor quality footage , but I am taking steps to get a head cleaning tape for my VCR in the hope that the quality will improve ....
footage of Jeff Unwin in the original Hellbug at Valla racing in 1990.....

yes it did , back then it had a 2.9 type-4 with twin 48IDA webers (which I believe are now on Matt Berrys Hillbilly racer) and later that year changed from the webers to injection .
For the past 5 years the sports sedan has been running a temporary (throw together) engine so that my staff , my son , my mates and myself could use it .
The original 2.9 engine went into my turbo oval back in 2005 and was turbocharged . Now that I have built a complete new engine for my oval , the original 2.9 is being refreshened with a new crank & rods , pistons & barrels , the type-4 titanium valve heads off the oval engine and will be fitted back into the sports sedan. Nothing will be used from the current 2440 engine as I want to keep it as a complete spare .
The sports sedan will stay in the race shed now until the new engine is ready . Cant wait to drive it again with the big engine.......🤪
footage includes Dave Birchall in his 1956 oval beetle vs Stan Pobjoy in the bracket racing final , Penrose brothers race their street cars at Oran Park in 1994.....
lots of VW's competing at this hillclimb event , my then apprentice Jimmy & myself competing in my Purvis Eureka powered by a 1916 with stock heads and kadrons .......
some wild footage in this vid .... Stan Pobjoy spin , Molineux brothers black bug hits trees , and the most awesome footage of a gemini ( dont want to spoil the surprise ) and he borrowed the car off his wife to go racing , dont know how he explained this ...lol
wonder what became of some of those cars....the fat green simmons clad oval and matt black beetle from SA at the drags?........actually what about the rotary bug Wayne?
of course lovin that green one at Huntley. blue notch looked good there too. So many VW competitors, looked like fun
Saw 3 eurikas heading north on the highway just yesterday ❗
hypo-vwAustralias 1st 10sec street beetle (Jan 2007) 10.49secs@132m
this is the oldest piece of vw footage that I have . It is not brilliant quality , but still viewable . The full chassis super-sedan affecionately known as 'Herbie' was a crowd favourite . In this vid Bob Marskell (owner/driver) shows his full potential .
This is the same car I drove at Goulburn speedway in 1991/1992 . Herbie is now retired and lives in the customer carpark at WPVW.....The supercharged engine was sold off in pieces but I still have the methanol injection and the supercharger . The supercharger is currently fitted to Ben Fords' WPVW drag bug....

I took the entire rotary conversion and 5-speed out of my bug in 1997 , fitted a 1916cc engine and trans , and sold it to a guy near Bathurst . I serviced it for a while as he travelled down to visit his relatives , but I heard about 12 months ago that it had been stolen in Sydney and trashed....
The blue notch in the vids is the same notch that I have at my shop now restoring it for KD . I was writing for VWMA on the resto but there has been a temporary hold on the project as KD has being doing his doctors degree at uni , just got married and bought a house .
SO MUCH FUN !! ALWAYS HAS BEEN AND ALWAYS WILL BE....we even look back at the catasrophes , and still laugh !!
just having VW fun in the paddock at Logbridge Farm Dapto for the Volksday 1990 VW show , a 2 day event including motokhana events.... those were the days when you could go nuts in a paddock , enjoy yourself , without the risk of someone being sued .....
this video is entirely of Huntley hill 2000 , round 5 of the NSW hillclimb championships . Wpvw was there and set another new track record in the sports sedan 2001-3000 class . This record still stands today , 10 years on (25.46 secs for the 658 meter climb)......
since then I have set a new club record in the same class of 24.45 secs.....
in 2000 I won the Australian Hillclimb Championship in the sports sedan 2001-3000ml class . Competeing against mazda rotarys , datsuns , holden 6cyls , none could catch the WPVW sports sedan.....
My son Dean driving his first VW beetle , aged 18 now his daily driver is a 69 custom beetle that he restored himself for his design & technology project for his HSC......
not very good footage sorry , Craig Torrens in the red beetle , Stan Pobjoy in the maroon beetle , Jeff Unwin in the green Hellbug , Steve Muller in the blue ragtop oval , Paul Muller in the blue oval.....
please let me know if any of these drivers are incorrect....
