Common oil leak spots are from the sump plate/bolts/plug, oil cooler seals, rocker cover seals, pushrod seals and front or rear main seals. The first thing I would do is wipe it all clean and then wait a while for some oil to leak out so you can see where it is actually leaking from. If the top of the heater boxes is caked in oil then you should check for leaks from the rocker cover. Rocker cover gaskets and sump plate gaskets and seals are very cheap and can be replaced easily. Most of the other leaks require a bit more work to fix, but it can all be done.

Hi

see the other post about "how much oil does your beetle leak..."

tappet covers are usually the main cause...
of bad oil leaks...
because the gaskets aren't fitted properly...
it must be difficult as there are heaps of tappet covers leaking..

You just need to take your time fitting the new tappet gaskets and when fitting the covers on the engine...

vws don't have a rear engine oil seal...
so they can leak there if the breather hoses are blocked...

Lee

ps: sometimes oil leaks from the cylinders or heads etc..
due to the different metals expanding and contracting..
and no sealing compound used...

FACT: MOST AIR COOLED VW ENGINES DO LEAK OIL...
some a drip... some a lot.... lol

Hi

pushrod seals can also leak if gasket cement isn't used on both sides of the seals... as the seals do crack...

You also need silicon push rod seals....

this is usually an engine out job...

same as front engine seal and rear gearbox seal....

Lee

ps; always buy your vw bits off a vw parts shop....
much cheaper than anywhere else.....
