Pretty sure rings are total seal from memory.
Troy isn't cutting any corners in converting this thing to a race engine. Near enough isn't good enough and he is making sure this thing is Built tough. Running 30psi of boost you don't use cheap crap as you know it'll come back to bite you in a big way!!
