We'll while we are all being so righteous (me included) I'd like to pick a few comments in here to discuss
1. A GPS reads slower up hill or down hill......is it really that noticeable or measurable, considering the info in the post of 11.08pm I doubt this would be the case
2. I'm probably wrong, it happened once before👍, but I think the keep left rule applies to posted speed limits of 80kph or above, not above 80.
3. Drivers who are not competent or confident should seek further training, now I know that this opinion wasn't directed at me ( it wasn't was it ?) but here's an eg. I consider myself to be both confident and competent, a year or so back I did a trip from Newcastle to WA and back, except for one stretch going into Ceduna where I hit a bit over 120 (speedo reading ) I doubt if I went much over 95kph the whole trip, I was overtaken many times by 4x4's towing vans big enough to house half of the boat people who have arrived here in the last 10 years, in my considered opinion anyone driving a rig of that size at the speeds that they were traveling at is just plain f@&$d in the head, maximum allowable ion WA when towing is 80kph I believe, but that's a story for a different time. I was in the wench towing a small trailer, at posted speeds I believe my " rig " would have been above my ability to control in the event of an emergency or unforeseen drama, in this case I consider that I was both confident and competent, AND considerate in that I always moved over to let overtaking vehicles through.
4. An unsafe vehicle should not be on the road...we all drive older vehicles, there's no way you will convince me that any of those vehicles are as safe as any modern well maintained vehicle is, regardless of how diligent we are in maintaining our pride and joy, the wench would be something to behold in the event of a collision. That aside how do any one of us know what the circumstances are of any other car or driver sharing the road with us. Case in point....many years ago I owned a Comodore, 4 slotter, black vinyl roof, dark red paintwork, a nice vehicle for its time, a well maintained company vehicle,on a trip up the coast I had a problem develop, with the front left tyre, checked the boot (it's a boot , not a trunk for all you want to be Americans) only to find that the previous driver of the vehicle had removed the jack and not replaced it ( found out latter that it was on the bench in his garage ) so there I was limping along at a speed considerably below the speed limit with a big bulge on the inner sided of my tyre, was I driving an unsafe vehicle? Bet your arse I was, did I have any choice? f$&@k no, no mobile phones in those days, a wife and 2 kids in the car so not going to head off on foot in the middle of summer leaving them alone on the side of the road. So I drove on at speed that the vehicle was safe at. Consider always that you don't know the other fellas circumstance and give him / her some consideration.
5. Penalise the slow driver? Consider the possibility of the other blokes situation.
6. The speed limit is 85% of the safe speed......I can show you a well travelled road within 1 1/2 hours of my home with a posted speed limit of 100kph, two vehicles could not travel side by side on this road without each having 2wheels in the gravel... A rare exception I know but none the less there are plenty of roads out there with unrealistic speed limits posted.
Here endeth the lesson / rant
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross a road without being asked for it's motive!
Im in my work ute 8-12 hours a day, I set my cruise control to the GPS in the Panasonic Toughbook that I get my jobs through, touch wood havnet been nabed for speeding for about 18 years, my bug has a GPS hud so I drive to the speed shown
Donn there are many instances around where the speed limit makes no sense, I think the preoccupation with watching our speedos all the time must affect our ability to observe what's going on around us
Donn. depending on the GPS receiver, some dont account for vertical speed. when driving up or down hill a proportion of your surface speed is distributed to the verticle direction and since the GPS is only accounting for horizonal speed it only sees the remaining portion of the total surface or slope speed minus the vertical.
On my GPS, this is noticeable and very noticeable on steep hills.
for example on a 45º hill a GPS that only accounts for horizontal speed would read 0.707 times the speedo speed.
Pretty sure most GPSs now days can calculate speed in 3D. mine is 5 years old and doesn't obviously.
That actually makes me wonder what the actual speed I was doing on my BMX down this massive steep hill, same GPS said I was going 68km/h, seems faster than that.
I need to go measure the angle of the road now so I can find out 😂
Its a bloody steep hill for sure!

it does!
lots of times where I been caught out on things happening in front have been checking speed or checking mirrors. only takes a split sec for something to happen in front.

On my way to Brisbane from Coloundra a guy in a subaru wagon was in the right hand lane doing 95KPH in the 110KPH zone, traffic banked up and people were passing on the left, when another car came up in the left lane he accelerated to cut the people off in the left lane that were passing him and paced the car on the left stopping all overtaking, i eventally passed him on the left and he gave me the bird, he drove this way until i left at morayfield, dozens of keep left signs on the highway.
He should be shot with a ball of his own shit. it is a wonder someone did not run him off the road.

The worst ones around here are the rural school zones.
Most around here don;t have the new flashing signs yet so its very easy to get caught out.
I have one about a Km down the road from my house and the cops often sit there.
Having to slow from 100 to 40 a million KMs before you even get close to the school is a joke.
50 or 60 would still be safe and they don't need to start half a KM down the road either.
I agree.
Knowing when they start or stop without the timed flashing lights is hard when you don't have a clock of any kind in your car. I have to get my phone out and check when going though school zones. Bit of a joke
Knowing when shool holidays is also one I mess up on as I don't know holidays are on cos I have no reference to it. Living in a rural area, only got cows and chooks to tell me 🙄 have no forms of media, no Friends that have kids.
Only found out on Friday holidays were on cos school zone wasn't flashing at the times signed at a few towns I went though.
Lucky for me, the local school zone actually start and ends where the school is.
also whats up with school times starting at 2pm? no one goes home at 2pm!

some I seen is apparent towns, where actually I see 1 or 2 farm houses in the distance, drops from 100 to 60 for 300m or so then back to 100

A law is open to interpretation by those who enforce it.
A rule must be enforced.
Are speed limits road rules or laws? (methinks they are laws).
Slow drivers and road hogs should be penalised!!! 😬
In a world where law enforcement has been confused with revenue raising, going slow will not be seen as an event to be penalised.
Exceeding the limit is easily detected, therefore easily enforced, and revenue collection is autonomously applied.

x2
And with the constant variation with posted limits, the resultant confusion can only contribute to revenue raised.
Is this an accident?
😁 I go for the journey not just to get to some place.😁
hard to enjoy a journey when its like this.
I go to places where hardly anyone drives just to drive so I don't have others getting in the way.

1/ It was in 2006 that Victoria introduced the law that insisted all new cars speedoes had to read higher than actual speed. I was pulled over in my 12 month old Jumbuck purchased by me new in 2011. I was apparently speeding clocked at 108kph. speedo read 102. Received a fine. When I complained to the cuntstable(?) about the possibility my speedo must be reading low he was about to put a canary on it!!! I asured him I'd take it up with Proton. I did and they was made to readjust it.
2/ Agree with others. Speed limit is not the default speed you should achieve. This mentality that one should drive slower has only been around for the last 20 years. As a kid in our Austin driving at our usual 45 mph Fairlane V8's would pass us at their usual 60mph. This was all accpeted practice and not a word ever spoken that "you should be driving at the limit" likely because many cars couldnt reach it
3/ Like many laws introduced to fix a problem Victoria brought in one in that if you didnt keep to the left (when not overtaking) you were fined. I'd like to see the number of fines issued. Seems to me police are only interested in the easy fine, the one less likely opposed in court.
4/ The older you get the less nerve you have. I've noticed a decline in my nerves. I'm 58yo. I used to club race Lotus powered twin cam Ford Escorts in my 20's, motorcross bikes and the like. Sharp as a button. Now I drive slower and fear the worst. I once drove from home to a shop 5kms away. On my return 10 minutes later I believed I kenw the condition of the road well enough to speed up. While I had been away from that route some oil was spilt on the road and I went carreering of into a ditch. Anything can happen. Just sayin'
5/ I think the main reason people sit 5-10 kph under the limit now is speed cameras. And that should be understood.

Crikey tweety, I thought is was just me !
😂
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!
Set up a GPS in the Capitva yesterday to test how low the speedo was reading - averaged 5km below the limit.
Another thing I noticed was to achieve the posted limit I would need the speedo needle on the cusp of the numeral on the dial eg; the right side of the last 0 in 60, 80, 100.
Drove home from work late last night/early morning on an empty road and drove on the upper end of the 85th percentile rule; doing 117kmh (gps reading) in a 100zone - speedo was reading 122kmh.
Doing 94kmh in an 80 zone and I felt like I was driving much faster than I should for those areas.
I took an alternate route and did a stint on the freeway (110kmh zone) and took the GPS up to 129kmh and set cruise control - speedo indicated just shy of 140kmh.
Tuned Type IV power - shaking out the rust.
taking my brother to hoppers crossing to pick up a 4L60 E for his ute yesterday.
driving 110 on the calder by speedo , gps 110 👍
can't beat old cars for accuracy!
of course, got 2 dickheads going bit under sitting in the right lane for the whole 75km.🙄

Joel as Rudi a customer of mine for many years says "Roads are for cars, footpaths are for people in Germany you step onto the road and splat" Educate the morons or fence the school area and have a pedestrian crossing gate controlled by traffic lights. This would allow the traffic to travel at a reasonable speed unlike Pennant Hills road or Blaxland road and a million other roads in the country. When we were on holidays I think i saw a few school zones with 80kph so perhaps the kids run faster there.
