And you people wonder why AVD is bagged to the $hit on other forums. You dont have an open mind to other peoples decisions and likings and you just right them off. If somebody has bought a New beetle it is their decision and liking, at least they have decide that VW is a great name to get in to. For $25000 i personally think this is cheap for a great quality built car. And if they decide to go one step further and join a forum i certainly 'wouldnt' recommend them to here. I am actually quite suprised from some of the comments on here, there were some people who i thought actually appreciated and admired the build of the New Bug. But much to my disgust you have disappointed me again. Dont get me wrong, i admire and appreciate the people who restore a classic but i dont have the time or the money to continually be replacing an item every weekend, or every second day. I dont earn alot of money, im a beauty therapist for god sake, i earn crap money. But i saved my hard earned money to buy a new bug, and i dont regret any cent of it. This is my second new bug and has set me back $..... hahaha not telling cause then that would cause more of a stir. Lets just say that it beats a WRX and also fully sic VL calais. But i love it and now wouldnt touch a classic with a ten foot pole, because of you people. Can you imagine me posting a topic: 'Help theres something wrong with my 64 bug', i would get no response because i am an outcast.

Why do NB owners get so defensive when someone doesn't like them?

THEY DON"T LIKE THE CAR - NOT YOU!

Maybe when one is purchased the owners should forget the paint protection and get dermis protection to protect their THIN SKIN.

The question was what do YOU prefer?

It is not closed minded to not like a certain model of car.

For Y2K, if you don't like it here why do you stay?

why r u an outcast y2k???

I like new beetles... i also like kombis and notches and type 3...and even some of the kit cars...

and i have had both new cars (not vws) and old cars (also not vw) as well as my vws...

i dont think that makes me an outcast (my rambling make me an outcast), nor should it make u one...

tell u what...i'll send u a hug, as well as :kiss just so u know...i like u.

so stay on avd...cause it's only my opinion that matters anyway....*she says with tongue in cheek*

and honestly, i reckon if we could have the new bugs priced at $20K...heaps from here would eb lining up to make them the 'other car'...😉

New Beetle is a marketing gurus wet dream, hitching a ride on the CLASSIC's legend. Could rent space on from front seat to bottom of screen in sydney real estate market.(waste of space) A great great car for getting tanned thighs (screen leans way back) and taking midgets sightseeing in the back to all the cafe/latte hangouts that these buyers inhabit (style queens):duh

Buy the Golf and with the money saved buy a CLASSIC.😀

I have been called worse than a style queen, would rather be known to cruise around town looking for cafes than to be known for being stuck on the side of the road smelling like oil, cause my aircooled motor has failed me again !

Y2K,

As I have told you many times before, your bug is mighty sweet. There are many people both on and off this forum that would give their right arm to own (or even drive your beast!).

EVERYONE ELSE

I find it interesting that people are quite willing to say that the don't like the new beetle (fair enough, everyone is entitled to their opinion), and when the new beetle owners get defensive (and why shouldn't we, it is pretty dissapointing that people who are supposed to share our passion, bag our choice), the "classic" beetle lovers say crap that we need to get a thick skin. BUT if the shoe was on the other foot, and the new beetle owners said stuff like the older beetles are crap etc etc etc then we would have a riot.

Some people on this forum really need to practice what they preach.

I note that it was asked why Y2K is still on the forum if she doesn't like what is discussed, if you take note of her posts, she is hardly ever here, which is a damn shame as she is a fantastic girlie who is lots of fun and is very passionate about her VW. And that's what it should be about !

Most people on this forum are pretty cool, it is a pity that there are some w#$&^*% that spoil others enjoyment !

I don't agree with polls like this, I think that it just causes too much trouble.

I would take the classic. Not because I do not like the new beetle they are a great car to drive but like most modern cars they are full of COMPUTERS and when some thing goes wrong it cost $500 labour to find the little $3. switch thats broken. I just prefer the old school cars.

I'm not nuts about either. I like my old Beetle because it was cheap, and I've learned a lot from working on it, but if I'd had more money to spend on a car there's no way I would have bought either. My car has endeared itself to me, but when the perfect next car comes along I don't think I'm going to feel bad for very long as I watch it's new owner drive off.

Also, why's everybody so against plastic cars? There are plenty of classic and plastic cars.

hahaha i really love this site.... just such an awesome cross section of society with the freedom to speak ones mind! i like it when shit gets stirred as all the opinions come out of the woodwork, people get pissed and others are like 'oh dear, big group hug needed! love in the air!' hahahaha.

personally i didnt see anyone really shit on new cars so far in this thread, maybve Y2K is still burnin about something said a while back.... some people on the forum do need to learn that an opinion is just that, an opinon, and not cram it down others throats... but some people maybe need to mature and be less sensitive maybe?

personally, air cooled all the way for me due to the following reasons- simplicity, original timeless designs and soul... for a lot of people the vw is like a mate, sometimes bitch hahaha.... i dislike the new vw's due to costing big $ to repair, plastic souless feel and the price tag! oh and the service you get from some VW dealerships. ive had my thread deleted where i had my rant on that issue....however 'reliability' (apart from the many lemons), smooth ride and air con are great things!

I actually think it is great people start a discussion like this...maybe once and for all we get some values across and stop this pathetic rivalry when we are all here for the same reason!! Like mscabrio said many people on this forum are pretty cool but alot are :cussing

And it's true, if someone came along and started a thread saying 'Why the hell would you drive a 30 year old, run-down pregnant roller skate, that doesn't stop back firing or dripping oil??" For one, I am positive 100% you would have a defensive comment to come back at that with and I am sure a riot would be started and alot of people would be offended.

It's not very nice to say to someone 'Well why are you here then?"...people who buy new beetles and join a Volkswagen forum like this obviously want to share the passion with us and isn't someone who randomly thought, oooh I'll buy a new beetle!! And you can always tell those types of people as they don't wave and 'don't get it'. But I think people should start showing NB owners a little respect.

And you know what AERECOOLED!! when my 68' BEETLE is complete in about a months time I will be driving around looking for cafes!!!!! Does that make me a 'style queen'? PFFT! I think you have a problem and with insults like that on this forum I think you are just jealous of the new beetles (MAYBE COS YOU CAN'T AFFORD ONE!!!). Like I said I will happily drive my old bug around until I save up MY HARD EARNED MONEY just to buy a new beetle!! And I hope by then I will be treated with more respect on this forum.

BLUE_62 wrote:I put my name down for the classic original.
I am a beetle lover and a Mini lover and VW f**ked it up
much the same was BMW did trying to replicate the Mini.
These 2 cars were developed as a peoples car. Cheap
enough for the average family to afford and cheap to maintain and run....

What the hell is cheap about 40k price tags
and certainly nothing cheap about BMW servicing
thats for sure. Give me my 62 standard anyday!
That's crap. Here's why (adopted from a post of mine in 2002).

Maybe one of the old timers here can fill us in (for I wasn't born yet in the heyday of the Beetle), but I had the distinct impression VW was NEVER in the $13,990 drive away price bracket. Never was, never wanted to be - they always thought themselves as a premium European product and traded on that.

Comparing by relative costs of Beetles versus Holdens (the Big Mac cost of living approach)

According to the Holden web site (use Google), the Holden HQ Premier cost $2394 new in 1971, which is roughly equivalent to the Holden Commode Acclaim, as the Premier wasn't a bottom scraper car. The Acclaim 3.6 V6 is second from the bottom of the range, so I think this is a valid choice. The Acclaim is $39,050 at the dealers.

In 1971, the 1500, being the bottom of the VW range then, was slightly less expensive than the Premier at $2059 according to this link:

http://members.netro.com.au/~vwcc/guests.htm

Using the same ratio, an 1500 if sold in today's money, would cost about $33,600 now. The NB 1.6 Miami (the bottom of the NB range) doesn't - it's $25,990 RRP.

Comparing by average weekly wage

In 1971, the average male wage was $4,352 per year, meaning you'd own a Beetle 1500 in about 24.72 weeks assuming you paid no tax and could splurge a complete salary on a car. In November 2004 using ABS figures, the same average wage is $973 per week. Munging using average wage figures, this means you can own a NB Miami 1.6 in approximately 26.76 weeks, meaning the New Beetle - at worst - is only 8.2% more expensive to buy in real terms, making the adjusted value of a new Beetle 1500 if sold today at best around $24,000.

Figuring in statistical bits and pieces

Due to wage restraint, J-curves, CPI and non-CPI money-for-jam figures and the chicken I sacrificed and the spread of the tea leaves, the real purchase parity figure of a VW 1971 Beetle 1500 if sold in today's money lies somewhere between $24,000 and $33,000, and three out of four of the models of the NB range lie in that range, and the top of the range is still less expensive than the Holden Acclaim. Therefore, NB's are not a rip off => QED.

If you look at the VW range in 1971, it included the 1500 (entry level VW and entry level Beetle), Super Beetle, Type 3's, KG, Buses. Translating out, the Beetle 1500 is like a bottom end Polo, which you can have for $16,990 at the moment, far cheaper than the 1500 was in real terms. The bottom end Polo has more interior room, more passive and active safety (airbags, ABS and EBD), and more gadgets (like aircon, power steering, and a CD player) than a 1500 did, which just had high backed seats and a collapsable steering column.

Modern VW's are cheaper, faster, safer, more fuel efficient, carry more, and are thus are very good value for money.

Yours in Lies, damned lies and statistics,
Andrew

vanderaj:

agreed. I think the biggest myth is that beetles were dirt cheap to begin with. They had less power and were smaller than their GM and ford contemporaries but they cost the same. they were marketed as a premium product because they were european.

I dont hate NB's, I just don't think they are very good value in terms of space, ergonomics etc compared to similar cars in its price range. A bit of a form over function design. Although the classic beetle is pretty crap space wise as well, although the reason is that it's design is rooted in the 1930's.
