Question type 3 factory rag tops

Hi, just wanting a few questions answered. My wife was wanting to add a type 3 to our VW collection. We have found a 72 fast back auto. He thinks it's a factory rag top. Did type 3 come in a rag top from factory and if so how can you tell. Also how hard is it to find a spare auto box for one.
Thanks :no::no:

We are still looking at it. We are going to see the car on Thursday or Friday. Thanks for your help. As for how many spare auto's. Two to three would be good for spares.
Thanks again,

There were only a few prototypes made (by Karmann?) for a type 3 convertable and only as a notchback. Check out thesamba for more info. It's a pity they never made it.

Yes it is a shame they did not go through with the rag top. It looks great. If we buy the fast back I will post pic's.

I'm confused.

I was talking about rag tops not convertibles. This one from what I have been told is a after market one as VW did not offer them to the public.

Never heard of or seen a type 3 material sunroof...

or a steel one for that matter...

the cabriolet type 3 in the VW factory is excellent looking...
they would have sold a packet of them....

LEE

PS: the frame for a sunroof has to be very substantial
as the roof doesn't like a big hole cut in it... lol

The car is not what we are looking for. It needs more work than i wanted to do. I'm already doing a full resto on my 78 kombi and will than do my everyday driver a 68 bettle when I finish the kombi (both auto's). If anyone is interested in a white 72 auto fast back with a aftermarket rag top, which needs restoring (rust and paint) call Steve 07 38868586 brisbane north side.

Theres a square with a ragtop...

I got into contact with the company that did the one in that famous square, and for information's sake, as of about a week ago, pricing for this setup, shipped to Oz was about $1,200 USD

well...I have the closest thing that I (or this thread) have seen to the famous museum prototype, although the later body style. Of course it's from a notch...why you would bother cutting a fasty into a hunchback of a convertible has always puzzled me.

The prototype was probably as flexible as a Triumph Herald going round a corner, and a roofed model that has been cut needs help...nothing is as simple and beautiful as the museum sample.

But...if you need to take up to 4 lovely ladies out in the sun, what better ride?

Mine has been strengthened, engineered, previously registered in NSW, and most importantly with a well fitting roof. It's now needing my love to get back on the road.

Sorry kids, no pics on me today. My completion timeframe is flexible with so many projects, but interest will bump her right up the queue...

So, 'vdubbloke' and other seriously interested parties can PM me if you want in on the action as she will definately be sold on completion.
